Gordon Rhind Leslie (From Scotland to Canada and back again
A friend in Canada is looking for information on Gordon Leslie Rhind (parents John Leslie and Margaret Stables)who left Scotland for Canada sometime before 1914. He enlisted in the Canadian Railway Troops on the 14th November 1914.
He was subsequently wounded, died of his wounds in Liverpool in 1918 and was then buried at St Machar, Old Aberdeen.
The family would like answers to the following.
1) When did Gordon leave for Canada?
1) Was it common practice to send wounded soldiers back to Liverpool ?
2) Is there any way that they can find out what his injuries were.?
I am hoping that someone in the TS family will be able to point them in the right direction.
Thank you all in advance
Frances

Hello Frances,
Your best chance of finding out what happened to him would be the Canadian Army file. You can view his Attestation Form here and there’s also information about how to obtain a copy of the complete file. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/data ... j602f08tq3
Here’s some comprehensive information about researching WW1 Canadian soldiers. Parts 13 and 14 deal with the treatment of wounds etc. It lists all the Canadian Army hospitals. You’ll see there’s an entry there for No. 5 General Hospital at Liverpool used by Canadians between 1917 and 1919, but that was just one of many. http://regimentalrogue.com/misc/researc ... part13.htm
There’s more about him at The Canadian Great War Project. http://www.canadiangreatwarproject.com/ ... p?Id=17816
I can’t see any obvious record of him going to Canada or elsewhere. I can only see what’s in the index and many records have only initials and no date of birth. http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/
Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the reply.
The family already have Gordon's attestation papers and have made use of the Canadian war project website.
I will point them in the direction of your other suggestions.
Kind Regards
Frances

Re: Gordon Rhind Leslie (From Scotland to Canada and back ag
Bit of a sore head this one and I'm wondering if I've got it right!
If I have the right family then they are in Canada in 1891 with a Gordon born Scotland about 1889.
The 1901 census shows a birth date of 29th August 1889 for Gordon. There is a Gordon Rhind Leslie born 1889 at SP. Do they have Gordon's birth entry. 1911 shows something different.
So if it's them there is a very small window for their travel to Canada. FMP seems to start from 1890 so maybe they travelled between August and December 1889.
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette
In May, 1890 the following family arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia from Liverpool on the Buenos Ayrean
Mr. Leslie, Plasterer
Mrs Leslie, Wife
Jas(?) Leslie child, ?
Jno Leslie, child, 9
Wm Leslie, child, 6
Geo Leslie, child, 3
Gordon Leslie, infant, 1
Very faded, hence the question marks.
All the best,
Sarah
P.S. Looks like they were in Aberdeen in 1881, so the St Machar's burial makes sense.

Did John Leslie the Plasterer live in School Road, Old Aberdeen? If so it looks like he made the news in The Dundee Courier, Tuesday, July 20, 1880. It was nothing serious, just a traffic offence, and probably the horse’s fault.

I think he lived at 20 Jasmine Terrace in 1881, but he could well have moved after the incident. I don't see any other John Leslies who are plasters in Aberdeen in 1881. Just as well that he moved to a country with more space!
Best,
Sarah

Hello Annette, Alan and Sarah,
Thank you all for helping out with the question of "Gordon Rhind Leslie".
Gordon's Attestation Paper, gave his birth date as August 29th,1893. His birth was actually 29th August 1889. His headstone states that he was 29 when he died which would be correct, given that he died in 1918.
Yes, that is the correct family arriving in Halifax in May 1890.
Gordon's parents John and Margaret (Stables) were married at 3 School Road, The Old Aberdeen Hotel, where Margaret's father was innkeeper, so again it would appear to be the correct John Leslie who had the accident with the horse.
Thank you for all this info, the family in Canada will be delighted. =D>
I wonder if I could direct you to the posting that I made with regards to Gordons GG grandparents, Thomas Leslie and Elizabeth Bremner, I have had some information about them but I am still looking for their Birth records.
Kind Regards and many thanks
Frances

Hi I have been doing research on Gordon as he is my great uncle, my grandfather William was his brother, my family have Gordons war medals, pictures and his parents marriage certificate, yes they lived on Old Machar Rd.. His father John died (my date could be off as I am on vacation and don't have the records with me) in 1893, he was a plasterer and fell off scaffolding doing work on the ceiling of the masonic hall in Newcastle New Brunswick. Gordons brother Jim moved to British Columbia and was married to Millie. I have so much information and questions and hope I can connect with those who are looking for information on the Leslie family.
