Cheers from Calgary, Alberta
I am trying to find information on my great uncle L/Cpl James Cunningham from Denny. He was in the 1st Bn of the Gordon Highlanders. I know he was killed on the 14 Jun 1917 in France and Flanders and is buried in the Arras Memorial Cemetery. His name is listed on the Denny War Memorial. For reasons unknown, his name is not mentioned in the Gordon Highlanders casualty list.
I understand that the majority of WW1 records were destroyed in a fire so my search for any additional information is difficult including any notice in The Scotsman besides living across the pond. I’ve found Ancestry has a terrible search engine to find anything. This is what I have,
Name: James Cunningham
Birth Place: Colinton, Midlothian
Death Date: 14 Jun 1917
Death Location: France & Flanders
Enlistment Location: Denny
Rank: L/Corporal
Regiment: Gordon Highlanders
Battalion: 1st Battalion
Number: S/5215
Type of Casualty: Killed in action
Theatre of War: Western European Theatre
I know that the War office sent a letter to the next of kin notifying them of the death and another regarding the burial site. Are these now part of the public records that i could access?
At the least I would like to know when he enlisted and what he did during the war. If anyone can lead me on steps to get any additional information, I would appreciate it.
His older brother, John was also killed during the war a mere two months before the end. I’ll make a separate posting so as not to confuse any information
Thanks in advance.
Gary

Hello ExRHR (Gary)
Someone should be along soon that may be able to assist you with your research.
Have you tried the National Archives UK? I know from experience it can be a bit tricky to use (weel I thought so )
Anyway good luck anyhow.
