78th Highlanders

Evening all you helpful people! First post here, so forgive me if this is an obvious question. I'm wondering where I should look to find out for information on my long-lost Gt-Gt-Grandfather who served in the 78th Highlanders.

I believe that he was away with the regiment during the census of 1871 (on 2/3 April?), as his wife and son are registered with living with his father and I know he was still alive.

I think that around that time, the 78th Highlanders were in Montreal (and had been there since 1867 and in Gibraltar prior to that).

Where should I start looking?!

I used the search box on the right hand side entering 78th highlanders and there were 20 posts on the topic. you may find some relevant info on specific sources for the regiment there.

If he received an Army pension FMP may have records for him.

And here's a history of the 78th Foot published in the 1880s. You’ll see that in 1871 there were two Depot companies of the 78th which were responsible for recruitment, training, and reinforcement, while the Service companies were overseas,

The Depot was at Aberdeen from April 1870 until about August 1871, then a few months at Edinburgh until the Service companies return to the UK and they all ended up in Ireland.
