Hello Heather,

There's mention near the end of this thread of “3632 Private Hugh Ramsay 3/1st LRRE(T).” If the (T) is for Territorial perhaps the initials are for a County?

Here's a list of Territorial RE renumbering from 1917. There's not many starting with 'L' in that lot. http://www.1914-1918.net/TF_renumbering_re.htm

Regular Army, Not London. But I did find something on the Sapper site stating Melvern which works for me as Dad was from Nitshill. I have his paybook and I can read a lot of it but some is difficult. Even the Sapper site doesn't tell me what the "L" stands for unless Levern??? Not sure. I did see where he went for Jungle training prior to his tour in Malaya and when he trained and qualified as a Dog Handler. I have a number of photos of dad with his "wee dugs" his favorite was Abdul. (Dad had a special way of coaxing me to eat as a wee lass, he had a book on Dogs of War. He would show me the pictures and of course I had to take a wee bite whenever the doggie did a trick or obeyed his commands. The picture I remember most is of a German Setter latching onto his handlers padded arm. He was especially hungry so I always had to take 2 bites. )
But usually when I find a Military acronym I can suss it out or dig it out on google. This one stumps me. There was another just inside the cover...2LT.RE I looked all over to find the regiment till I realized it was 2nd Lt Royal Engineers.
