Need help in finding out what the 4th Queens Company Volunteer Rifle Brigade raised in Corstorphine 1860s cap badge would have been.
Has been suggested that it was the three hunting horns of the Forrester family but can find no reference to this.
Any help appreciated.
Frances

Re: Cap Badges
Hello Frances,
Not having much luck with this.
The Edinburgh Volunteer Rifle Regiment started with eight companies but soon grew to over 20. Each company was to consist of not more than 100 men. The 4th, University Company, chiefly composed of students at the University of Edinburgh, but open to all resident in the city who have been matriculated students of any university.
See bottom of first column this page of the Glasgow Herald, 28 June, 1859.. https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=B ... %2C8193678
According to Records of the Scottish Volunteer Force, a badge, different for each company, was worn on the cap and pouch-belt.

When you google for a badge a couple are found but nothing to indicate they belongs to a particular company, so perhaps they dropped the individuality and these were later ones. If only made for a company of 100 men they would be a rare item today. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from= ... 5573.m1684
If you have no luck here you could try the British Badge Forum. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/ or maybe contact the University of Edinburgh to see if they can help.
SCRAN has a photograph for sale but cannot tell if resolution high enough to study their badges. Headgear appears to be the Shako, so 1862-75. http://www.scran.ac.uk/database/record. ... -499-158-C
Hope that helps,
Alan
