Looking for Ian Douglas Crawford

Post by captainfrasca » Thu May 31, 2018 12:18 am

I am looking for relatives and/or photos of RAF Sergeant Ian Douglas Crawford, Son of John and Jean Crawford, of Glasgow.

Ian Crashed with his crew in their Halifax bomber in Muiden, Holland on May 1st 1943. None of the crew survived.

We are erecting a monument to honour these men and we are desperatly in need of background stories and photos of the crew. Uptill now we haven't been very lucky.

Is there anyone related to Ian who can help us out and tell us more about him?

I am not sure if I am allowed to post links, but if you google Halifax monument Muiden you will find us.

Yorkshire Air Museum, CWGC and 77 squadron have nothing on IAN...

Kind regards,

David van Coolwijk

That is the website I made. I also made a Facbookpage. It can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/HalifaxMuiden/

I wonder if any of the newspaper archives may hold any further information about him, an obituary perhaps.
The Glasgow Herald or Evening Times are the 2 surviving Glasgow newspapers - but there were others around that time.

Or if the Mitchell Library may hold anything.

I did have a look at the Scottish War memorial site - http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/ but nothing was jumping out at me.

I did find something interesting and odd. Ian has a grave in Muiden the Netherlands, but the website of find a grave also mentions one registered in Glasgow.

His name is very likely added to the family gravestone in Glasgow, while he is actually buried elsewhere.

I checked http://www.memento-mori.co.uk for crawfords in Sandymount Cemetery, there are several of that surname buried there
including a Jean T S nee Dunnachie who died in 1947 aged 62 - that may be his mother , a 65 year old John Craig Crawford could be his father, he died in 1940 , that couple married in 1909, which fits with Ian's age.

Ian's death is recorded in the service returns in Scotland
the details can be purchased on Scotlands people - I'm not certain how much extra information that may contain though.
