For
Army officers 1914-1921:
Information about officers during this time can be found in series WO 339. To find out whether we hold documents concerning the person in whom you are interested, search the Catalogue entering the surname in which you are interested, e.g. Smithers, as a keyword, WO 339 in the series reference - but experience tells me that if you put full name or sir name and initial it cuts out a lot of unnecessary returns.
And

Evening Times Roll of Honour
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... honour.htm
During the First World War, the Evening Times newspaper printed short biographies of service personnel who were reported lost, missing or wounded.
Most of these biographies were accompanied by a photograph of these long-gone heroes, often now the only one that exists.
The Mitchell has produced an index to some 6,500 of these entries as a valuable addition to their Family History resources.
