Hi
I have a relative on my tree who was a sergeant in the Scot's Greys (info from death certificate of his daughter)
His name was Charles Henderson and I think he was born in Perthshire about 1800, but apart from that I know absolutely nothing about him.
Can anyone tell me more about the Scots Greys and whether or not the knowledge that he served with them, could help me in finding out more about him?
Thanks

See http://regiments.org/regiments/uk/cav/D02rsg.htm
Are you sure that it was the Royal Scots Greys?, as the TNA Catalogue gives WO 97/1235/73 CHARLES HENDERSON Born ALYTH, Perthshire Served in Royal Horse Artillery Discharged aged 37, served 1808 - 1830 ??
Even if that's not him, there's still a chance that there will be helpful records at TNA at Kew, but you may need to use a professional military records researcher.

Thanks David, what a great help. I really can't be absolutely sure if he was in the Scots Geys or not. This was written on his daughter's death certificate but I know that sort of info can often be flawed.
I do think however that he was stationed in Woolwich in 1828 where his daughter was born. Will this help at all?
Te age and location of your Charles makes it a definite possibility for my Charles, thanks.

Hi Sweetpea
If he was stationed at Woolwich in 1828 he would have been in the Royal Horse Artillery - Woolwich is still the base of the Royal Artillery and the regiment museum is still there. I am currently researching an ancestor who served in the RHA 1808 - 1818 and got his service record from Kew. the RHA was in action at Waterloo in 1815.
Hope this helps
Ted

Sorry Ted
Found the searchable military information thread and the National Archives site. Managed to download a list of Waterloo medals for the Royal Horse and Foot Artillery and found my Charles Henderson (I think?)
Don't know if you (or Andy or anyone else) can answer my few (and most probably stupid) questions?(Bearing in mind here I know absolutely nothing abot anything military!)
Did the Royal Horse and Foot Artillery have regiments? (I found my relative under a 'Lieutenant Colonel Robert Bull's Troop?)
What is a Bombadier? (Did say the questions were stupid!) I found him listed as one although I thought he was a sergeant?
Are the Royal Horse and Foot Artillery the same as the Cameron Highlanders or the Royal Scots?
Many thanks
Sue

The Cameron Highlanders or the Royal Scot were foot regiments, i.e foot soldiers, with 1 or more battalions with a battalion consisting of between 600 and 1,000 officers and men at full strength.
The Royal Regiment of Artillery was divided at various times into the field artillery, - big guns also originally pulled by horses or other draught animals; horse artillery, - light, more mobile artillery; and garrison artillery, - static guns in defensive positions in forts etc.
The RHA has always had as a basic element, the troop, consisting of 6 or more guns plus limbers and 100 or more horses, plus all the men and other transport for ammunition etc. to run this. Sometimes troops were combined into regiments of artillery.
The basic foot soldier rank is private, and the artillery equivalent is bombardier.
Have a detailed look at www.regiments.org for lots more info.

Hi Sweetpea
Sound advice here from David on the differences between Horse / Artillery and Infantry Regiments etc. The site David suggests gives clear explanations of who does what where & when.
However - the good news is - your relative was in the same unit as mine - he too served under Lt Col R Bull. If you contact me by PM we can exchange further details if you wish.
Best regards
Ted
