47th Foot: 1st battalion of Royal Veterans

Post by garibaldired » Mon Jul 31, 2006 7:41 pm

I'm hoping someone can help me here (possibly David?!).
Despite endless googling I can't find where my (possibly) 3 x gt grandfather would have been in 1811. I know he was in Bermuda in 1802 (he was wounded) but his wife was English and a daughter born c1811 was born in England. He left the regiment in 1814 and returned to Midlothian.
Thanks in advance!
Meg

Hmmm.......

The 47th of Foot only leads to

47th Regiment of Foot (4th Marines) 1739-1748
47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot

Searching www.regiments.org on an alphabetic basis for "Royal Veterans" leads to a reference - "Royal Veteran Battalions [see numeric index]" but that only leads back to http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/l ... gxrefn.htm which then leads to http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/795vet1.htm !! and, finally, - the 1st Royal Veteran Battalion at
www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/795vet1.htm#history .....

Wow  , talk about a "www dense" post :?: :!:

Thanks David.

But now I'm even more confused - no mention of Bermuda and they appear to be at sea (much like me!) in 1811.

Hi Meg

That's the best that I can do........

An expert researcher in the TNA military records might be able to do better.

I'll happily pass on to you the details of such an expert military researcher in the TNA records.

David,
Thanks again.
Pennies are tight so I'll see what I can come up with on my own first, but thanks for the offer.

Meg

What was his name ?

Have you tried a search in the NAS Catalogue?, - see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... lt.asp?j=1 , but note that you need to search on the basis of "John AND Smith", - as the "and" must be in caps, i.e. "AND", - to see if any WO records exist, and have been added to the index.

Just to complicate matters further, this TNA index is as yet far from complete, so that the absence of a hit when searching doesn't mean that there isn't a relevant and helpful record at KEW, never mind that only certain WO records are currently being added to the on-line index.

In other words, it's perfectly possible that there may well be records of interest at Kew that will not appear in the on-line index for some considerable time.

If there is a hit you can write/email TNA for an estimate for copies of the records in the WO series that were found.

However, there may be relevant and valuable records in other WO series of records, but TNA will not carry out research for you to locate these, - instead a professional researcher has to be used.

Thanks for all that, David. Much appreciate your help.
His name was James Dobie/Dobbie and I have accessed his service records at Kew. Unfortunately they didn't yield a great deal and I had to leave until next time a trawl through the pension recrds (his aren't indexed). So much to do so little time................!

A lot of the Napoleonic prisoners at Penicuik had been captured at sea from all over the place.
