Hi Claudette and Annie

Just to update you both. Since my last posting I have discovered that Elizabeth Stewart (Forsyth) died in Lasswade, Midlothian in 1898. Daniel Stewart, her son died in the Rosslyne Asylum, Midlothian having been admitted with "senile mania" from the Dalkeith poorhouse. He died in 1900. (Thanks to Lothian Health Services archives again.)

Elizabeth's death certificate states she had a mother Marion Forsyth (domestic servant) no father is mentioned. It also looks as if Elizabeth lived with a Peter Simpson in her final years. There are interesting discrepancies around ages given and marriages (or not).

Overall I feel quite sad to know Daniel lived in a poorhouse when he had brought up his daughter, my great grandmother Elizabeth after her mother Agnes died after childbirth. My great grandmother married a grocer and was living fairly comfortably, only a few miles away in Leith , Edinburgh, when Daniel was in the poorhouse.

My grandmother (Elizabeth's daughter), born in 1895 never mentioned Daniel or his mother (also Elizabeth). So maybe they were never mentioned to her. However its easy to jump to conclusions without the full facts!

Finally, I have also found out that Agnes and Daniel's father Alexander are buried in nearby unmarked graves in Edinburgh.

Best wishes

Still not sure about Elizabeth Stewart/Forsyth

Post by csa » Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:16 pm

Hi

Not long after my last post I found out I was mistaken about Eliz Stewart/Forsyth's Death Cert and a new partner Peter Simpson. I still haven't found her DC

Following an Australian contact through Genes Reuntited recently, I found some info about an Elizabeth Forsyth born 10 Oct 1810, whose parents were George Forsyth and Christian McCrae. This matched the Elizabeth Forsyth I had found on the LDS site some time ago, but she is older than the Eliz Stewart on 5 consecutive censuses ( 1851-1891 ) in Leith, with estimated year of birth between 1812/1814/1816/1816/1814. The Eliz Stewart in the censuses is living with her husband Alexander and sons Daniel and George and then she is living with Daniel and her granddaughter Elizabeth only. I am absolutely sure this is my ggggrandmotherr.

According to my Australian contact an Eliz Stewart is living with her brother James Forsyth baker and her son George Stewart in Aberdeen in 1841. Daniel (or Donald) is also in Aberdeen but living with Christian (?Eliz's mother).Alexander Stewart is not with them. I have found these censuses on Ancestry.

How can I be sure that the Eliz Forsyth b1810 in Inverness and moved to Aberdeen, did then move to Leith by 1851 and is the "right" Elizabeth Forsyth/Stewart? Is the fact that an Eliz Stewart has a son George and her mother is looking after a son Daniel (Donald), both children of the right age, in Aberdeen in 1841 more than a coincidence?

I am not sure if the information I have provided, as well as previous posts, is clear. Please let me know.

Many thanks

Hi

With "a little help from a friend" I have at last found Elizabeth's DC.
She died in North Poorhouse, Leith in 1897 "aged 92" with no record of her parents unfortunately. I suppose I had missed it because of the age of death which would put her dob at 1805.

So many thanks for all the help I have received on this. Still looking for certainty re her parents ? Goerge Forsyth and Christian McCrae.
