I posted a certificate here about a week back trying to identify which William Morison was my ancestor, and it turned out to be the one born in 1772 in Brae of Bognie, Aberdeenshire (Oh, how I love that name!) So, using Brae of Bognie as a guide, I went looking for other Morisons and to cut a long story short, I've managed to get the Morisons back to 1689!
As far as I can tell, (although I will be needing a trip to the NAS to confirm it), in 1635 an Alexander Morison was granted the lands of Bognie. He had at least three sons, all born there - George, Alexander and John. George married the Viscountess of Frendraught apparently, inherited lands through her, and there's a wealthy bunch of Morrisons in Aberdeenshire today descended from him. Lucky so and sos.
Alexander was given a small piece of the land in his father's will, Brae of Bognie. He had at least two sons, James born in 1689 and George born 1690. James is my 8x great grandfather!!
Okay, yes, I know, it's a younger son line and eventually turns into an illegitimate line anyway, so I'm about as close to actual nobility as England are to becoming world cup winners, but hey! At least I know the family USED to have money - even if it was 500 years ago!
