Found G Gran at last, do all roads lead to Scotland ? part 1

Post by brendaannc » Tue Apr 07, 2009 11:56 pm

Hi All, I would like to share my sucess story with you all, its a bit long winded though.

Found my G Gran Margaret Dell, in 1901 census Richmond Surrey, just had born Scotland 1871. I knew her name was formerly Davidson, from my Grans birth cert.
I searched high & low, It was such a common name. Stories had added to the difficulty. I was told she lived in Princes st edinburgh, that her mother was a Margarite born in Spain, who had married a Davidson on board a ship, he died she married again ?.
Birth records and census searches lead to nothing.

I paid a researcher to search the Scots records with no luck, an expert from the IGI wrote to me, he was about to vist Edinburg he was intrigued and hoped to help, again a blank.

I still can not find a marriage between Margaret and Walter Dell my G Grandad, if I could of I would of found a fathers name.
Again I got a researcher on the case, as my G Grandad was in the Army in 1891, there was a possibility the marrige was recorded in Army records only, but again a blank was drawn.

Hooray 1911 census, about 12 years into my search, there she is born abt 1871 RATHO, found her christening ?, Margaret Mclaren Davidson 1869.
Yes correct cos I then found her 1891 Kensington b1869 Scotland, they had confused the Mclaren part of her name during transcription.
From the day I found her in 1911, I have found many lovely Scots cousins. Lots of help and lots of relations back to a Thomas Davidson married Janet Horsbrough 1805 Lasswade, And to George Mclaren married Agnes Bishop 1769.

Still wish I could find a marriage, though it looks as if there is not one, unless they married on board a ship, and where did the Spanish Margarite come from. My Margarets Mother died aged 31, did her father James remarry ?, was it a Margarite.

best regards Brenda

Hi Brenda,

So happy to hear of your find due to the 1911 census. I know the excitement you must have felt. Stick with it and you might eventually find the MC and/or the Spanish Margarite you're looking for.

Regards,
Anne H
