Best bit of Christmas day?
A chance combination of names which jumped out at me on a visit to NRH on 23rd December led to a whole family emerging on Christmas day! ( Last minute shopping on 23rd? Puh! forget it - far more important things to do!!
I was looking at NRH for a death of a missing Christian Dick. While checking all the Christian Dicks, one caught my attention - the parents' names were not quite spot-on, (mother's name given as May White, not Marion) but enough of interest that I took notes to follow up later. She married in 1862 at Hamilton to Robert Ellis, her mother's name incorrect again (given as Christina this time) but there was still enough about it that I was sure she was one of my lot. e.g her occupation was given as dressmaker as I knew she was from the 1861 where I'd last seen her, her father was Robert Dick a clerk, and her age was correct.
It seems it's just as well I "bumped into" her at NRH 'cos given the 1881 census entry it seems unlikley I'd have pieced her life together otherwise! Robert Ellis seems to have been a corporal with the Scots Greys & later a Janitor at Edinburgh University, and they certainly got about!!
