NEED HELP!!

Post by thomson34 » Wed Jan 18, 2006 11:38 pm

Is there anyone out there that can help me? I live in California, both my parents are from Scotland, I am trying to locate any information on my mother's father, his name is or was Thomas Flood from Bannockburn. I just want to know if he had any other children and if they might have a picture of him since my mother has never seen her father, he left when she was 2 which was in 1939. I have tried searching but it comes up blank. I dont really understand how to use the site.

Thank you
Anna Thomson

Hullo Anna

Welcome to Talking Scot.

Have you looked on the Scotlands People site for Thomas FLOOD?

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

It might be best not to limit yourself to Bannockburn in your search , as he may well have moved elsewhere.

Can you give us your mother's mother's name? That might help in looking for a mariage on SP. A mariage certificate might yield helpful information.

Same applies to a death certificate. Do you have any idea at all who his parents were? Any idea of his age?

Do hope one of us can help you.

Best wishes
Catriona

Surprisingly for such an apparently uncommon surname, between 1900 and 1930 (the limit of what's available on line) there's 11 mariages involving a Thomas FLOOD.

If the marriage was in 1929 or later, the process of checking for siblings is easy, as, from that year onwards, the indexes start to show also the maiden surname of the mother.

Even if the marriage was earlier it shouldn't take too much additional effort to check out births with the surname FLOOD.

From 1974 onwards the death indexes start to show the maiden surname of the mother.

Starting from information in the early decades of the 20th century it's a straightforward matter to locate possible living relatives, but you have to visit NRH in Edinburgh or one of the increasing number of centres in Scotland like Park Circus in Glasgow that are linked into the DIGROS system. Obviously you can also employ a professional researcher.

I had a quick look on :

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/

for FLOODS in the area.

Thankfully not that many [ take that any way you like ;)]

J. Flood - 2 in Bannockburn, 1 in Grangemouth [2 junctions down the motorway from B'Burn]
and an M. Flood in Bridge of Allan [ just the other side of Stirling from Bannockburn]

Incidentally I'm in California too - but the Scottish Stirlingshire one !
