Hello and thanks to all the TalkingScot folk who helped me correctly identify an ancestor. For seven generations, the first-born son in our family has been named John Duncan (OK, so we're not very imaginative!).
The first John Duncan that I knew of had a son, named John (sorry!), and it was John Duncan #2 who emigrated to Australia with his family.
To cut a long story short-ish, my father is #5, my brother is #6, and my nephew is #7. In fact, that is how they refer to each other - by number.
I have spent years trying to find out more about #1 ... to see if he was in fact #1 ... or maybe the naming trend started before him.
Turns out #1's father was named Matthew. # 1 was actually the #2 son. And he was born in Ireland!
Thank you in particular to Jack who has spent much time looking up information for me - Jack you are a kind and generous man.
Next to my McLean's from Tiree and Skye!
Kind regards and many, many thanks!

Wonderful to hear of your success & that Jack was able to offer you so much help.
I am finding Irish connections all over the place this week. Two I knew of,one I suspected & still haven't proven(need the 1841/51Censuses.) & two that came out of left field. So much for our ancestors staying put! Mine must have had Gypsy blood-I guess they just had to follow the work.

Quite frankly, I'm glad there's a name change. I quite deliberately gave my own two little boys non-family names!
Stuart, you should be very happy. In Australia we'd probably call you "Old tut! tut! Stuey"!
I mentioned to Jack, and I'll mention to you all as well (just in case you didn't know and are interested in research here in Australia - finding out where your branches dropped off!!) ... that the NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages indexes are *free* to search. Births are still only up to 1905, but marriages have now been released up to 1955, and deaths up to 1975.
