Thanks so much for the info you provided on Stewies post (census)
As a first timer I went to the Dick Institute in Kilmarnock last year and a helpful Male Assistant helped me find the film I required and set up the machine he found the information I needed in no time.
The second time however HE wasn't there and as the staff looked very busy (heads down) I decided to go it alone found the film I was after and set up the thingy and after what seemed like hours scrolling through very faint and hard to read film I found my relly's , when I got outside not only did I have a thumping headache but it was dark (bejings it wis tea-time)
and as for the notes I scribbled down (whit a mess)
I'll maybe try again sometime ANY TIPS.
So Jack your work you provided was very much appreciated.
Regards Rita

Rita you brought back memories of my visits there. I have found them very helpful. I get travel sick almost immediately I try to scroll through records. So I try to look away but it doesn't help. If anyone has any tips how to avoid this it would be much appreciated.

Tips?

Post by Jack » Wed Apr 12, 2006 10:57 pm

Hi Rita,
Not too sure what tips you mean... :? what is it you're having some trouble with?
Unless you have a census name index - or address,
then about the only way to find someone is the hard way (which you know all about!).

Took me a full day to find my GG-GF in Paisley 1841 - the reason being there were 4 films to look at.
But find him i did - on just about the very last page of the 4th film!

Please say what what tips you think you need - but mind, i'm very much an amateur....
But i'm sure there are many others on TS who'll be able to give advice.

Hello Jack and Mallog
I don't feel so bad now thought it was just me, the guy who helped me the first time seemed to find the information so quick.

Jack,

You´ve do so much for us! You found my gr,gr.grandmother (in Paisley of all places), two years ago, living with a family of the same name, but apparently not connected. A dike yet to be broached. And did attempt to connect us but without success.
But you did it out of the goodness of your heart, and are still at it!

Keep up the good work - I almost said "Skál fyrir Jack", but "Lang may his lum reek" definitely is more appropriate.

Orraverybest,

Thrall

Hi Thrall,
Awfy kind of you to write, but to my embarrassment!
And another a big reddy because i can't remember who your gg-granny in Paisley was.
Maybe re-post details on one of the forums?; after a couple of years someone may have fresh ideas.

Hi Jack, I´m not sure I got a chance to thank you properly, as the old forum folded soon after you (it was you, wasn´t it ?) revealed my gr.gr.granny in the 1841 census. In fact I hadn´t printed out the details, but think that she, Ann Thomson, born c.1820 County Donegal, Ireland, you found living with other Thomsons, in Paisley, who were born in Scotland I seem to remember. Anyway, Ann had a fatherless daughter, also Ann, in 1844, and married a farmer, James McFarlane P. of Menteith in 1845.

You queried this then, had another McFarlane I think, but I am convinced. Funny thing was, Ann elder named her parents as John Gallagher and Ann McColl in Donegal, so presumably she was adopted. I have got no further with the Irish connection. My mother and her sisters were never told anything about this line, they had other more respectable rellies to be told about!

No need to apologise, the names going through your head daily are astonishing. Keep up the good work....... =D> =D>

I have been lucky in my searches, as any library I have went to the census's have all been indexed.

Also taking down notes - there are plenty of free genealogy forms that you can download from the internet - and there are shops or even the library that will let you photo copy for aound 10p a sheet

I also made up BMD note/sheets for myself as well, and took these along to park circus
Black Isle - Beaton Bethune Campbell
Inverness - Mackintosh
Aberdeen - Mitchell Leslie
Ireland - Cosgrove McGuire
Southshields - Patterson/Pattieson Campbell Sloan
Greenock - Boyle McPhail Blair McKechnie Clark
