Finally found a living connection on the maternal line!

Post by joette » Fri May 19, 2006 4:19 pm

I have "found" five living connections but they have all been on the paternal side-Father's lot were a lot more staid & usually got married.
Anyway with a name like Brown wasn't holiding out much hope but I have been using a certain connection site & had not been getting any so called "Hot Matches" turns out I had disabled the option-I am not very computer literate.
Anyway ended up with about five pages of them & decided to trawl through them all.I was becoming brain dead when I got goose bumps over one & sent a message with others. This afternoon got a reply & we share the same GGGrandparents.
My Mum will be so excited & it is nice to know what happened to this Brown. She was the eldest daughter & I couldn't find her but she married in 1856 so made it to confirm her parentage!

Brown connection

Post by Hunter-G » Thu Dec 14, 2006 10:53 pm

Dear Joette and David:
I too have a Brown connection.
Just in case there is a common relative, here is the info:
1 Peter Hunter
. +Marion Buchanan
..... 2 James Hunter b. 1867 -
.............................. 1 Samuel Brown
. +Eliza Jane Barbour
......... +Catherine Brown b. 1871 -
............ 3 James Hunter b. 1890 -
............ 3 Thomas Grant Hunter b. 1891 - d. 1961 ("Uncle Tommy")
............ 3 Agnes Hunter b. 1894 -
............ 3 John Hunter b. 1896 -
............ 3 Mary Hunter b. 1899 -
............ 3 Catherine Hunter b. 1900 -

I got Peter Hunter, Marion Buchanan, Samuel Brown and Eliza Jane Barbour from the Marriage certificate of James Hunter and Catherine Brown.
I found the ICI for Samuel Brown and Eliza Jane Barbour Marriage certificate, but have as yet not got to getting the actual cert.
My father called Thomas Grant, "Uncle Tommy". But I have not yet been able to connect the two families. The hopes are that a John Hunter in my father's line is a brother to Peter Hunter in this line. And that would make Thomas Grant a "something numbered" cousin "several numbers" removed rather than an "Uncle". Although it would probably stick as a term of respect since Tommy born 1891 was 14 years older than my father born 1905.

best regards,
Greg Hunter

Re Brown families

Post by Jack » Fri Dec 15, 2006 7:55 pm

I too have direct BROWN ancestors, but they were from Falkirk, then onto Wattston just north of Airdrie.
--
But i've BROWNs in Ayrshire "marrying into" my MILNE ancestor line.
One is a Daniel BROWN, baker, b.1863 Irvine who married my 2C 2R Agnes GLEN in 1883 at Ardrossan.
Censuses have Daniel's father Robert BROWN, sawyer, also as born Irvine,
and mother, Isabella McKELVIE as born Brodick, Arran.
--
I've done practically nothing on Daniel & Agnes yet. They had at least these 6 children (below).
First 4 born Ardrossan/Saltcoats, the other 2 born Edinburgh.
The family were at 19 Montgomerie Lane, Ardrossan 1891;
then at 10 Myrtle St, Milton, Glasgow in 1901.
--
Robert Brown - b. 1885
Alexander Brown - b. 1887
Agnes McLaren Brown - b. 1889
Daniel Brown - b. 1892
Archibald Smith Brown - b. 1894
James McKelvie Brown - b. 1896
--
Mother Agnes GLEN died in Glasgow 20 Dec 1914.
Father Daniel BROWN died in Glasgow 6 Jun 1934.

Hi Jack

Sorry to take so much time (over a year!!!!) to look at your post but its a good response.

The Daniel Brown who married Agnes Glen is in fact my great grand uncle, I am descended from his younger brother Archibald, who was my great grandfather.

My middle name is Brown which my my maternal Grandmothers maiden surname.

Daniel and Archie were one of 8 Children , their mother dies 8 days after Archies birth and there father dies 2 years later in 1871.

I havent really done anything on this line apart from the Census, however a relative of the Daniels Sister, Catherine who also married a Glen is still alive ( in hers 80s) and i am trying to arrange to see her with my mother in the next couple of months.

If you want any more infor let me know
