More success on my lines

Post by StewL » Thu Sep 28, 2006 2:01 am

Well I finally decided to officially place this in the success stories.

I have been having some great success lately with getting more wains in my main lines, through the use of 1841 censuses
As some of you would be aware I was always a bit reluctant to use census information, probably due to the very, very poor results I got when I first started this game.

But thanks to Jack convincing me otherwise, I now am a great supporter of using census data.

For those of you who might be interested, I now start my census searches using the wains of the parents I am looking at, then searching for the parents in same locations. When I say I am having good results, I am only talking about a couple of families at the present, but to me they are important as I only had one or maybe two wains in my list, usually of course direct descendants, but now I have 7-8 for each line. :D

Of course there are still parents where I have come to a brickwall, but on one of my Stewart lot, I am tending to think he may have been an only child.

But most thanks should go to all the good people on this site who have helped me from a raw beginner to a reasonably competent researcher, note I only say reasonably competent :D

Ps. Yesterday I got my first matches on FreeCen

Well done Stewie. It's great when things just come together.
I too have found great success on the Census-especially when it's the grandweans staying with Granny that night.Opens up avenues which were closed when the surname is a common one.
It's usually the Parish of birth which is the best help to me on my quest.
Glad you have been "converted" as to their usefullness.

Hi Stewie

Like you, to begin with I didn't bother much with censuses. Again. like you, Jack converted me  I now own quite a few CD's and these have been very helpful. Again I must thank Jack for pointing me in the right direction. They are really geat when they show up another relie living with the family. I've had quite a few of those.

The other very useful tool I have found are MIs. To begin with I didn't think any of my lot would have been well off enough to have a gravestone. However, much to my surprise, quite a few did and the information on the ones pre 1855 are great. It really ties down dates and confirms marriages, children etc.

Thanks all

Jean like you I never thought to look at MI's as my lot were as poor as church mouses

So perhaps that is another avenue I will have to move onto in the future. So I must find out what MI's are available for the possible locations of my long lost deid punters

1841 Census

Post by Alice Bradford » Sat Sep 30, 2006 5:23 am

The 1841 census that I looked at did not give relationships and so I wondered how I was supposed to find out how some of the people were related. I wanted to look at the 1851 census and it wasn't on Ancestry and so I stopped there for the time being. I'd appreciate any advice anyone can give me.
Thanks,
Alice

Hi Alice

You can search on the 1851 census on Scotlands People- there is a link on the tabs at the top of this page - also if you click on the cenus tab you can get great guidance details. If you get stuck - post up who you are looking for - yer pals here on TS will soon help.

Best regards

Ted

Thanks Ted, I will try that. I'd decided to leave my Scottish research alone for a while because of brick walls. Now you will have me back trying.
Thanks again,
Alice
