I have long wanted to
1-Identify the "old "lady in the photo marked Australia 1865.
2-Find the fate of Janet McFarlane nee Veitch.
Janet was the sister of my GGGreat-Grandfather John Veitch. She was born in Crawford,Lanark like him according to the 1851 Census.Parents John Veitch & Betsy Tait.
In the 1841 Census she is living Mount Lothian,Penicuik with husband
Duncan McFarlane-he born Carnwath,Lanark(again 1851)
& three of their children Agnes,John &Ramsay Wardlaw.
Eldest daughter Elisabeth is with My GGGreat-grandfather John Veitch, his 2nd wife Janet Liddle & his daughter Helen & her newly married husband John Scott.
Ramsay marries Helen Robb in 1858 where his parents are not deceased.
No sign of them in 1861 Census & I could find no Death/remarriage for them so I was confident that they had gone to OZ.
I could find no trace of them there & their GGGGreat-Granddaughter was adamant that they had not gone to Australia as she could find no record of them.
I went to my FHC on Sat,mainly to look at OPRs& Scottish Church Records.I ended up looking on Ancestry & came up with several snippetts of info on some of my lines so I was happy.
The Computer was not cooperating so I looked at the Ausralian Vital Records Index & trawling through the Mc/Mac Farlanes/Farlins etc I found them both! Duncan & Janet -they did go to OZ &they both died there in 1872.
I can see where the confusion arose.Ramsay's Mother's surname on his Death Reg is Janet Beech not Veitch.
Her Death has her parents as John Veitch/Janet no surname & her Birthplace as Peebles-her Mother was from Peebles & it is possible she spent a time living there, maybe even raised there. It's where Helen |VeitchMy GreatGreat Grannny) was born
Duncan's birthplace is given as Glasgow which I suppose is near enough.
They died in Victoria which is the place named on the studio photo.
So as I know the lady is not Ramsay's wife Helen I am supposing it's Janet McFarlane nee Veitch.I knew she was a family member as the resemblance is there. The date fits.
The sad/touching thing is it looks like Janet died first then Duncan shortly thereafter.
They followed the naming pattern too with eldest son John like Duncan's Father(handy it's Janet's too) & eldest daughter Elizabeth like Janet's,then 2nd Daughter Agnes like Duncan's.If only I could work out who they called Ramsay after???

Would Ramsay be named for a place of origin rather than a person?joette wrote:They followed the naming pattern too with eldest son John like Duncan's Father(handy it's Janet's too) & eldest daughter Elizabeth like Janet's,then 2nd Daughter Agnes like Duncan's.If only I could work out who they called Ramsay after???

I don't know but was surprised how many Ramsay's there were indexed on the 1841 Census-just couldn't find mine on Ancestry.
I think Ramsay Wardlaw was some kind of a soldier/aristocrat or as my Grandpa would say"Big Chief eat the bread".
