Smith Surprise!!

Post by Jean Jeanie » Thu Nov 02, 2006 8:57 pm

Just had to share this with you lot. No one else would understand!!

If you received an e mail through the GR site asking if Jean Smith b. 1808 in your tree was the same Jean Smith who married Alexander Gray and had umpteen children. Would you be the same as me and think "ho hum Smith"?

Well what a surprise I got

Jean Smith is the sister of my husband's gg grandfather, John Smith

I hadn't bothered to look for any of his siblings, as with a name like Smith I thought it would be a nightmare.

I now have a wealth of information about this lady and her life, from her gg grandson and have been able to pass on information to him about her
brother, John Smith.

This hobby never ceases to amaze me :D

Hi Jean
I have a few Smiths here and there ( is there anyone who doesn't?? ) several more than are listed below, so I'm well used to that "ho hum Smith" feeling!!

....But that is great news and gives some hope to all of us Smith searchers out there - proof that miracles do happen! :D

Best wishes
Lesley
(who would, had it not been for a few devious wee twists of fate, have been a Smith at least several times over!!)
Researching:
Midlothian & Fife - Goalen, Lawrie, Ewart, Nimmo, Jamieson, Dick, Ballingall.
Dunbartonshire- Mcnicol, Davy, Guy, McCunn, McKenzie.
Ayrshire- Lyon, Parker, Mitchell, Fraser.
Easter Ross- McCulloch, Smith, Ross, Duff, Rose.

Hi Jean
I have all Smith's going back to Alexander Smith 1701 Cellerdyke, Fife.
Have had great success with my research except for a few illegitamate ones (10) Marriage & Deaths
Some of them kept changing their surnames on census which makes it even harder to find these 10. At least I have their Birth Certs
SMITH .. Cellerdyke
GERRARD St Monance
DEWAR, Kirkcaldy

Hi sidsmith
...and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Tracing Smiths is not an easy task, so it looks like you have done really well to get back as far as your Alexander in Cellardyke in 1701 - well done!

Best wishes
Lesley

Well blow me down

The above mentioned John Smith had a son, John Smith (strange eh  )
who was the brother of hubby's g grandmother, Helen.

Haven't looked at him for the same reason............the name. I thought it would be too costly on SP.

Well, just had contact from his gg grandson, and all the pieces fit into the puzzle. So walls just keep tumbling down :D :D :D

That's good news Jean, for all the rest of us "Smith" trackers out here!

I've no Johns but lots of Josephs and Marys in the Smith line, so like you, I've not really persued it whole heartedly. May do so now
