I won a prize, but what to use it for?

Second prize: 30 credits for Scotlandspeople AND three lookups of your choice at NAS or NRH goes to emanday
Erm! I'm still all of a flutter about this, but I have suddenly realised that I don't know what sort of stuff can be found at NAS or NRH  I have had a look on the NAS site but don't really understand it much.

Just as an example - would either of them hold information about the association (possibly sasines) between my mysterious (and very small) Girtrig family and the Girtrig Mill, Girtrig Farm and Girtrig Mound or Mount in Ayrshire, where they seem to have been as far back as the 1600's?

The name was still hanging around as late as the VERY early 1900's, but usually only as a middle name, and the early ancestors are probably the ones I am most curious about. It could hardly be called a typical Scottish name and the variations, Gitrig, Gitrigg, Gerthrigg, Girtridge plus a few more, made tracing the ones I did find quite a marathon.

Would lookups on NAS or NRH be of any use to me for this?

Hi Mary
It is likely to be both myself and Andrew who will be working on the lookups, so..

Generally Sasines are indexed at NAS as far back as 1780 as far as I remember. I think there are the odd areas before that for which a few indexes exist. A look in the 1780 onwards indexes for G in Ayrshire may throw up some names worth following up. Obviously to do the thing justice we would need the info on the family that you have, such as first names and dates for these folk so that we know who we are looking for, but this can be exchanged in emails if you prefer.

Best wishes
Lesley

Righty Ho, Lesley.

I'll sort out what I have and post a wee summary. I did enter Girtrig in the Any Text box on NAS search and got three results, but of what comes up only one actually mentions the name as in "sale of the farm of Girtrig". I dare say the actual documents go into more detail.

Maybe I could run the search again and email you the results. I have to admit I find the NAS site a bit hard going and so SLOOOOOWW!

I think i'd mentioned in a previous post that I wondered if they gave their name to these places or took their name from one of them - maybe Girtrig Mount/Mound. By the way, I found them on Old Maps.

Probably - it can be difficult to tell sometimes from the summary what the record actually consists of; it could be one short written page or it might be quite a lengthy document running to many pages or it just might turn out to be a whole bundle of documents!!

It is slow - drives ya nuts! Just like back in the days of dial-up

Best wishes

Oh the memories of dialup internet! One of my neighbours refused to upgrade to broadband and I really hated it when she asked me to help her out with something.

After sitting her down at my PC for half an hour she got the message and got "high speed connected" a couple of weeks ago. She's like a kid in a candy shop now
