Does anyone have a list of the abbreviations for ratings?
I have downloaded a few service records and I am trying to work out the following:
Prob - Probationary period I guess, its crossed out
A.M.I and what looks like a 7 with a squiggly top.
LM - no clue
The person with these ratings appears to have been missing after going out on a recon mission and somehow awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM)
Cheers,
Andy

Re: Royal Naval Ratings
Hello Andy,
The Distinguished Service Medal (D.S.M.) was established 14 October, 1914 and was awarded to personnel up to and including the rank of Chief Petty Officer (C.P.O.), so you’re probably looking at WW1 or 2.
Hopefully this link will get you page 75 and thereabouts of “The British Navy from Within” published 1914. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=lmk ... &q&f=false Also on the Internet Archive http://www.archive.org/details/britishn ... 00exrorich
Here’s a WW2 list http://www.naval-history.net/WW2aaRN-Pa ... Badges.htm
Here’s a good WW2 Royal Australian Navy list but chances are it’s very similar to R.N. http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/doc/glossary.asp
Could the recon have been aerial and perhaps R.N.A.S. or F.A.A?
Maybe one of them is Armourer's Mate?
See how you go with that lot.
All the best,
Alan
