From what ports in Germany would you be able to sail to Glasgow in the 1890s? What lines ran such vessels? How frequently would they depart? What was the length of the journey?
Thanks, Ketzel

Re: Germany to Glasgow passenger ships 1890s
Hi Ketzel
My first thought was that it would be much easier to sail from Germany to Leith, and get the train through to Glasgow, rather than sail all the way round the north of Scotland or the south of England, to get to Glasgow.

Re: Germany to Glasgow passenger ships 1890s
Hamburg appears to be a main port from Germany. From what ports in Germany would you be able to sail to Glasgow in the 1890s?
A lot of Europeans ended up in Britain mistakenly thinking they had landed in U S A
as when ships docked in U K to take on more passengers they thought they had reached their destination and came off the ship.
Many Jews who lived in Glasgow did not always come straight to Scotland .
Many landed in English ports and then came to Scotland.
If you post on this site the names you are researching there may be people who come accross your names .
Not the date line you are after but this site has some interesting data that could be useful on the index.

Re: Germany to Glasgow passenger ships 1890s
Hi Maureen,
Here are the ancestors whose history I'm trying to trace. They were all Jews from Eastern Europe who came to Glasgow in the late 19th century from Riga. I have reason to think they came directly (although serially) to Glasgow, rather than staying for a while in England, since they had a friend and Riga landsman who had already arrived in Glasgow by 1891. What I want to know is how they could have gotten to Glasgow from Riga, presumably via Germany. I know that the main German ports were Hamburg and Bremen. But were there passenger ships from either port that might have stopped in Glasgow?
Charles Morgan and his wife Liba (or Lieba or Lena) c. 1893
Rachel Morgan (who married Joseph Sherman) by March 1894
Charles's brothers Aron, Israel, and Robert also by March 1895
Charles's stepmother Tilly Morgan c. 1895-96
Her children Fannie, Dora, Bessie, Bertha, and Manuel c. 1895-96.
Thanks, Ketzel

Hi Ketzel,
On the Jew Gen SIte there is a Steven Morgan with search entries for both Sherman and Morgan in Glasgow,
Do you know him ? If not may be an idea to contact him.

Re: Germany to Glasgow passenger ships 1890s
Yes, I know Steve--he's my husband's second cousin. At times he and I have worked together on family history, but when it comes to the family's decade in Scotland I know more than he does, as he'd readily admit.
I'm coming to the conclusion that the family members--at least after Charles and his wife--came to Scotland by taking a boat from Riga to Libau, then the cattle steamship to Hull, then a train to Glasgow. They'd have to pay for Russian passports (expensive, and they were poor) or bribe Russian officials, but that probably would have been cheaper and easier than going overland through Germany--especially since Germany had stiff health inspections in place at its borders by 1895.
If only the Morgans had left letters and diaries!
Thanks very much for your help,
Ketzel
