I have just located the following information on form BT120 from findmypast:
MERCHANT SEAMANS REGISTRATION NUMBER: 14182
James Stewart Age: 58. (1778) Place of birth: Arran. County of birth: Buteshire
Series: BT120 Date range: 1835-1836 Piece number: 5
Occupation Cook. Ship belonging to: ? of Ayr – July 1836
Some time ago I obtained similar information relating to his son Daniel Stewart which lead to further data obtained from the National Archives this proved to be very helpful, however will the above lead to further data at Kew?
I know that James Stewart married on Arran about 1798 but there are no details on the IGI record and he is not listed on SP. He was living in Irvine, Ayrshire in 1820, according to the town census of that year, in the house were two Males & one female.James was noted as a Seaman. I cannot trace him in 1841 so I presume either he was at sea or he died between 1836 & 1841.
Does anyone know what the records were like between about 1795 & 1836?

We’ll probably have to have a look at what the NA says about “Looking for records of a merchant seaman serving up to 1857”
Online from 1835 which would be what you’ve seen, and there’s a bit more about Agreements and Crew Lists etc at Kew. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... re1857.htm
There’s more here setting out the information held for different periods. The very early records before 1834 don’t look like they would be very useful. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... 7-1860.htm

Sadly no ship was mentioned on the BT120 and the name of the owner was difficult to read could be Till of Ayr?
