Hi Ailsa,
Note on the description of the database on Family Search that the 1875 census online is only 52% complete at this time. In addition, New York county (Manhattan), where they are likely to be, is not included:

New York, State Census, 1875
Description
Images of the 1875 New York State Census as of 1 June 1875. The following counties are not included: Chemung, Clinton, Hamilton, New York (Manhattan), Niagara, Putnam, Queens, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Suffolk, Wayne, and Westchester. Currently this collection is 52% complete. Additional records will be added as they are completed.

A county map is indispensable when doing U.S. research. Here is the one for New York state: https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki ... unties_Map

and here is the page for New York County, with lots of useful information:
https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki ... ,_New_York

The Family Search wiki pages are being added to constantly and are really helpful now.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Ailsa,

Here are some bits of shrapnel that may fit the marriages you found:

For Isabella, the Edward Kindberg may be Edward O. Kindberg. There are various reports about him in the NY Times. It seems he divorced his wife of only a few years, Eleanor Robinson, in 1884. He died in 1909 and his will was contested. I can’t see any mention of another wife.

New York Times, 13 June, 1909.
E. O. Kindberg Estate to a Hospital.
The will of Edward O. Kindberg, who lived at 3 Rutherford Place, was filed for probate in the Surrogate’s Office yesterday. The petition gives the value of his real estate at more than $10,000 and personalty at more than $10,000 also. To his brother Charles A. Kindberg of ? Hampton Place, Brooklyn, he leaves $100. All the residue of his estate goes to the Presbyterian Hospital, which institution he also appoints as his executor.

Most of the NYT stuff is here. http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&a ... 80&bih=841

For Anne, Keven possibly should be Koven.

Reading Eagle - May 1, 1929. (That’s Reading Pa.)
Mrs Henry de Koven Rider has returned to her home in Sharon, Conn., after visiting the family of her son, Maurice C. Rider, of Hickory Tree Corner, Sinking Spring Road. http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1 ... 047,146979

New York Times, 29 August, 1936.
BOLT—RIDER
Mr. and Mrs. Halbert Ambrose Bolt of Brooklyn have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Barbara Peters Bolt, to Maurice Cowl Rider Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice C. Rider of Sinking Spring, Pa.
Miss Bolt was graduated from Brooklyn Friends School and is a junior at Adelphi College. She is a granddaughter of the Rev. William A. Mackey of Sharon, Conn.
Mr. Rider is a senior at Washington and Lee University and editor of The Southern Collegian. He is a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Henry de Koven Rider of Sharon. On the paternal side he is a descendant of Governors Cogshall and Burgess of New England. On his mother's side he is descended from the Ball family of Westmoreland County, Va.

For Sarah, there seems to have been a William M. Soule and a Sarah T. Soule involved in the Kindberg will case. I can’t see the full page. http://www.google.com.au/webhp?complete ... 80&bih=841

Hope that’s useful,
Alan

Hi Alan,
Very intriguing - I was beginning to think it was another Edward Kindberg, but looking at the census it is definitely 3 Rutherford Place where he lived with Isabella. He does not use the middle name O there or on the marriage details - 6th April 1885 in Manhattan. I can only assume that Isabella maybe died before him (1909) and after the 1905 census. Very interesting reading the newspaper accounts. The page about Sarah and William M Soule would be interesting to read - wonder how i could get that info?
Not sure about the De Keven Rider family - i will have to spend some time looking at the name in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. The fact i can't find any more about them in NY could mean they moved to another area. she may have married again.

I did find a marriage in 1886 of Isabella Thompson (Snr) age 45 and James Walpole also age 45 (occ stone mason same as William) in Huron City Michigan. His birthplace New York and hers Scotland. A long shot but another possibility.

You have been very helpful Alan - thanks for your time.
Sarah - the map is very helpful - i have never even been to New York so it makes will be a handy reference.
Regards
Ailsa

Hi again,
As you would expect from Alan's information above, Henry and Anne are on Main Street in Sharon, Litchfield county, Connecticut in 1930. He is a church organist and is indexed as Henry "De Coom" Rider.

Surprisingly, they are in St Louis Missouri in 1920. He is listed as, simply, HDK Rider and is a Salesman in a Perfumery (a versatile man!)

In 1910 they were living in Yonkers, Westchester county, New York. Henry was a Printing Salesman. They have a 20 year old son Maurice living with them who was born in Connecticut.

They are difficult to find in 1900…

Maurice was living in Reading, Pennsylvania when he filled in his WWI draft card. He calls himself Maurice Cowl Rider as Alan's info would lead one to suspect and says he was born in Middletown, Connecticut on 6 June 1890.

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Ailsa,

Here are the pages from the New York State Supreme Court appeal regarding the Kindberg estate. They contain some sad news.

On page 189 it mentions that in the second will (March) he had given $10,000 to the son of his deceased wife’s sister, and that shortly before making his first will (October) his wife had committed suicide. At the bottom of page 193 it refers to William and Sarah Soule being called as witnesses, and that they were parents of one of the legatees given $10,000.

“Reports of cases heard and determined in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the state of New York”, Volume 141, 1911.

There seems to be a fair bit of more recent stuff about this family scattered about. If you’d like a bit of help let me know and I’ll see what I can round up and send by PM.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Sorry i didn't get back sooner - I have been looking after my grand daughter while her mum and dad went to a wedding on Saturday. A one year old child leaves no time for computers!
I just finished reading the pages and it is like reading a crime novel! It is sad to read about Isabella's death - if you remember i discovered my gt gt gt gt grandfather Dugald McFarlane committed suicide in 1856 in Glasgow - you kindly found the notice in the Glasgow Herald for me. This Isabella was his grand-daughter.
I would be very grateful if you do find out any more about the case or the family - but only if you have the time and inclination. It would be interesting to know how the trial concluded and what was the cause of his death.

Many thanks again,

Ailsa

That’s okay Ailsa, I’ll have a look around for the more recent stuff.

In the meantime, here’s Isabella’s death notice, New York Times, October 12, 1908;
KINDBERG.—At 3 Rutherford Place, Oct. 10, Isabelle Kindberg. Funeral to-day, 2 P.M.

And there’s a Google Book of about 800 pages that contains over 300 pages of evidence, argument, etc from the Kindberg court hearing. You’ll possibly only see snippets. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=XRm ... CDgQ6AEwAA

I haven’t read right through it, but it contains the evidence of Sarah Thompson Soule (Sadie), and her husband, more info about Isabella’s death (gruesome), and other interesting bits scattered about. The Kindberg part is a pdf file of 5.91MB and will probably be alright to email if you'd like a copy. I have your email address from a few years ago but might be best if you sent me a PM to confirm.

All the best,
Alan

Hi to all at TS,

Just to keep you up to date on the Thompson family in New York – I had great help from Currie and SarahND and spent ages looking at links they kindly sent me by PM.

William 33
Isabella 31
Margaret 12
William 10
Lizzie 9
Isabella 4
Annie 1
Sarah born c. 1874

Still no trace of William Snr and Isabella Snr after the census of 1870. I will stop looking until the 1875 census is completed as I’m sure I am going round in circles! I’m sure they will turn up as Sarah was born c.1874. Margaret ,William and Lizzie are also no where to be found, but again I think the 1875 census should throw them up somewhere. Also William, Margaret and Lizzie Thompson are quite common names for marriage details. The fact they are all older may have some relevance too.

Isabella married Edward O Kindberg in 1885 Manhattan – He was from quite a wealthy family who made their fortune in Ship’s chandlery. His father Andrew Frederick Kindberg was from Sweden. Edward’s mother was Mary Louise Thompson (not to be confused with my Thompsons – not yet anyway!).They were married in 1857. He dealt in Books and paintings. Her father was John Thompson who was well known in Republican Political circles in the 1860/70s. Edward had one brother Charles Albert Kindberg. From what I can find out they also had two daughters who died when very young. Andrew Frederick Kindberg died on 9/4/1902 age 88. His wife Mary Louise died 2 days later age 74. Both of Pneumonia which was referred to as the “Grip” ? They left a fortune for the time of $200,000. This was to be shared between the two brothers.

Most of the following info I got from newspaper links (courtesy of Currie).
In Oct 1908 Isabella committed suicide by cutting her own throat – He had made out a Will after that leaving all of his money to the Presbyterian Hospital who had looked after her while she was ill. He left a nominal sum to his brother Charles, his nephew Albert and a nephew of Isabella’s named William Soule. He fell out with the brother over the Will distribution of the father and mother but had to leave him something so he could not contest.
Edward fell ill in early 1909, Heart failure - Myocarditis, he was 55. When he died 30/3/1909, another Will was disclosed by his Lawyer and friend of 20 years. The lawyer maintained that he (Edward) wanted to change his Will and that he didn't want to leave it to the hospital after all. Most of it was to be left to friends, the lawyer and his family were the biggest benefactors. This was done five days before he died when he could hardly raise his head of the pillow.
It went to the Supreme Court and I found an article in the New York Sun of 1912 saying that the second Will was invalid and that the $73,000 went to the Presbyterian Hospital. $100 dollars to the brother and nephew and $1,720 to the House keeper. I tried to find out more about Isabella, what would have made her take her own life, but there was very little in the newspapers of the time.

Ann as you know from above posts married Henry De Keven Rider which was shortened to Rider.
I won’t say much more about the family as I have info on one person who is still alive – he was in the Vietnam War and is now blind as a result. I found a link to him but as yet I have had no reply. It may be out of date.

Sarah – she was called Sadie, married William M Soule and had a son also called William. They were in contact with her sister Isabella as they are mentioned in the Court Case. The son William was meant to have an amount of the Will regardless if the Hospital inherited it. I don’t know if that happened. The last I have of her is on the 1910 Census, still in Manhattan with husband and son.

I will have to wait a bit longer for the 1975 census to find out what happened to the other members of my Thompson family. I am pleased with what I have so far as for years I thought they had moved to Ireland with Isabella’s mother – also Isabella McFarlane.
Sorry it has gone on a bit but I thought I would let you know the outcome.

Again many thanks for the help,

Ailsa
