John Thompson Brown leaving Scotland

Post by Margaret » Tue Mar 11, 2014 10:53 am

Hi, I am trying to find out when John T Brown, wife Ellen and children George and Elanore left Scotland for New Zealand. I think it was around 1925, it is said they went to a place called Gisborne for their health, so they could have arrived in Auckland or Wellington. I have looked at some shipping websites but so far it is a brick wall for me....any suggestions would be really appreciated. :)
Cheers

Hello Margaret,
Do you know their approximate birth dates? Quite a few Browns to search through without some further information... Also do you know John T Brown's occupation?

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
Not sure of ages but would say around mid 20's, I do know that George would have been 5 or 6 years of age when they arrived in NZ and Eleanor younger. Sorry limited information that is why it is so tricky to find them
thanks Sarah
cheers
Margaret :)

This is the closest I have come, you have probably seen it.

Leaving Liverpool on 11 Sep 1925 for Dunedin, NZ on the Suffolk:
Thomas Brown, miner age 34
Ellen Brown, 35, Wife
William Brown age 5
Ellen Brown age 3

Their address in Scotland was: 59, Clydesdale Pl., Crosshill, Baillieston

This would only work if John Thompson went by his middle name and perhaps George did too
I was trying to trace a family yesterday who nearly all switched back and forth from first to middle names from one record to another, so I thought it worth a look!

Best wishes,
Sarah

Hi Sarah
This is why I really enjoy TS there is always someone out there to look and maybe find something you have missed...No I hadn't got Thomas because didn't think outside the square and change the names. I am not sure of their address as this is a brand new contact that I have found
Once again many many thanks

Greetings Margaret.

Have sent a PM reply to you of info I have just got from a contact in Gisborne. As PapersPast only goes up to the early 1920's further research will require time in the local library checking out their more recent local press issues.

The info h/w does however give you some school enrolment info to cross check against published electorial roll info.

Alan SHARP.
