Hi,
I'm wondering if someone out there can help me find out what became of an ancestor of mine.
His name was Daniel Shannon Chalmers, and he was an inmate of the HMS Cumberland at the time of the 1881 census.
He was 13 yrs old, and he was born on 26 May 1868 in Port Glasgow, to Thomas Chalmers & Agnes Mair.
I have tried searching for him to see what became of him, but without success, I'd love to know why he was on
the Cumberland and what happened to him afterwards.
Can anyone help ?
Regards,
Daryl

I take it the training ship you are talking about was moored in the Gareloch?
Helensburgh heritage have a bit about it and the Empress [the replacement]:
http://www.helensburgh-heritage.co.uk/i ... Itemid=399
the article mentions 2 graves associated with the ships , one in Helensburgh, 1 in Rhu - there's a list from one gravestone, but not the other [no mention of a Chalmers]
I remember reading a book about the training ship at Dundee 'We'll Send Ye Tae The Mars' , that may give you an idea of where records can be found for the Cumberland.
