Hello Cathy,

Here's some National Archives info about researching merchant seamen. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... er1917.htm

This appears to be the record for your fellow. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.u ... r/C8281016

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hello Cathy,
The file linked by Alan in BT 372 would be his Seaman's Pouch, some contain a lot of information, others very little but usually there is a photo, albeit a mugshot, of the seaman.
If he served during WW2 then the file you really need is his CRS 10 which is his service record from Jan 1941 and if it has survived should be held at Kew in BT 382/931.
Regards
Hugh
