No.1 TUG BOAT, AYR HARBOUR, 1879

Post by q98 » Thu Feb 15, 2007 8:41 am

Seeking ANY data and photograph (if possible) relating to No. 1 Tug Boat, Ayr Harbour in 1879.

On 2nd August 1879, John McCREADIE died less than one month after the birth of his only son. On his Death Extract, the location and cause of death were recorded as “On board No. 1 tug boat in Ayr Harbour” and “Crushed to death under the lever of an engine”. The family resided at 8 Allison Street, Newton (sic) Ayr and consisted of John, Margaret, Jane, Isabella and John Jnr.

Some time between April 1881 and July 1883, the surviving family emigrated to Queenland, Australia where, on 14 February 1916, at the age of 36 Years, John joined 15th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. He was killed in action on 10 July 1917 and is buried at Strand Military Cemetery, south of Messines, Belgium.

Although not related, we share the same surname and county of birth. I am conducting private research to add to his military record held at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

Kind regards

No.1 TUG BOAT, AYR HARBOUR, 1879

Post by q98 » Sun Mar 02, 2008 1:07 am

Maintaining this topic as I have recently discovered I am related to this family and located extended family in USA and also Australia.

However, neither extended family nor I are able to locate John McCREADIE 's burial (probably early August 1879) which I believe was in Ballantrae as the normal practice of the time was to bury in Parish of birth.

As Ballantrae burial records are held at Girvan, is anyone able to visit and hopefully locate his burial data please?

Hi Jim
I see from the web site that you can ask for a search which costs £15, so if no one is in that area, that may be your best option.

Girvan Cemeteries - records held at Girvan Registration Office
Ballantrae Churchyard A77 - Main Street, Ballantrae KA26 0NB http://www.south-ayrshire.gov.uk/regist ... tions.aspx

Cemetery Charges: Search of Burial Records £15.00

Thanks for that info Lesley. My own family live just up the Ayrshire coast from Girvan but find it difficult to get there. I may HAVE to pay for the research.

Thanks again.

Reposting my original enquiry.

I visited Saltcoats, Ayrshire during October and, whilst there, travelled to Girvan Registry Office. Upon payment, a staff member searched 1879 Burial Records for Ballantrae - John McCREADIE was NOT buried in Ballantrae during 1879. It is probable therefore that John was buried in an Ayr graveyard. Can anyone assist with the date and location of his burial?

Due to privacy reasons [what privacy do the deceased require?], searches can only be conducted by staff members AFTER payment and one fee covers one search only!

It does seem a bit ridiculous for a death in 1879. Any people who knew the deceased personally would be well deceased themselves at this stage! Some of the states in the U.S. have similar rules (Iowa, for one) and it is very frustrating. Invariably, they find nothing... but one has the distinct impression that if a truly motivated person were looking (i.e. a family researcher) then the record would be found. :x Well, don't get me started on that one!

Regards,
Sarah

I have had a similar experience in the Cemeteries Records Office in Edinburgh. You used to be handed the lair books to go through by yourself. The last time I was in there, the official had to look through the book and show you the page you needed to see, but they had to cover over the part of the page showing the name and address of the current lairholder. Their details could not be shown due to the Data Protection Act.

All the best,
