John Elwood Hunter
Hi Folks,
I am totally stuck with my tree! I am trying to trace a John Elwood Hunter born 1863/5. (scotland) His job was a seaman. He ended up in Gloucester living near the docks. (i assume he travelled down on a ship) His father was called James Hunter, also a seaman. Ive tried the scotlands people site and have had no joy. Has anyone heard of the name middle Elwood, any clues? John Elwood Hunter continued to pass the Elwood middle name onto his children boys and girls.
Thanks for reading.

Hi Heather,
Welcome to TalkingScot.
One strong candidate for your John Elwood Hunter has to be the John Hunter (no middle name given) born in Glasgow (High Church registration district) on 10-Jul-1864 to parents James Hunter and Ann Elwood. I tracked him down on the online IGI using his name, his father's name and assumed the mother's surname as Elwood, born somewhere in the British Isles. He should be able to be found on ScotlandsPeople and hopefully there will be some clue on the birth certificate to confirm (or disprove) that this is the right one.
All the best,
AndrewP

Were I a betting man I'd have difficulty in not placing a substantial sum on John Hunter (no middle name given) born in Glasgow (High Church registration district) on 10-Jul-1864 to parents James Hunter and Ann Elwood, being the correct record.
It's far from unusual in Scotland for a male (I've never come across it for a female!) to adopt in later life as a middle name a family surname, - in this case his mother's maiden name of ELWOOD.
However, in this case, finding the marriage referred to on the 1864 birth record could be problematic, - irregular, perchance ?!

Hi folks,
Wow thankyou everyone for responding! Im well impressed and happy that you all have taken the time to help! I am going to follow up all advice given.
Hi Sarah, I have got John Elwood Hunter on the 1901 and 1891 England census via Ancestry. Once John E Hunter settled in Gloucester he appeared to have stayed. and evetually I came about. I am now primed up and ready for the hunt (pardon the pun).
My gran who was Elsie May Patricia Hunter was born in Gloucester in 1922, she used to tell my mother about the Hunter tartan!
Thank you once again for all being so welcoming.

Hi Heather,
Could this be his family in 1871? It wouldn't be the first time I have found an Ann as Elizabeth and vice versa. Elizabeth Ann was a common name.
1871
164 Kelvinhaugh St, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
James Hunter, 29, born Anderston, Ayrshire, ship carpenter
Elizabeth Hunter, 30, born Glasgow
John Hunter, 6, born Glasgow, Scholar
George Hunter, 3 born Glasgow
Isabella Hunter, 11 Mo born Glasgow
All the best,
Sarah
