Lanark District Lunatic Asylum (Hartwood)

Post by ninatoo » Wed Jul 02, 2008 4:12 am

Hello all,

I am trying to determine if an inmate at the above asylum was one of my ancestors. Is there any way I can get a hold of records for this institution?

In the 1901 census at Ancestry she is listed as Margaret Carl, patient, born 1865 in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. This is a long shot for me but I cannot find this ancestor with her husband on the 1901 census under what is her real name (Margaret Carroll, ms O'Brien, previously Logan). Her children from her previous marriage are living with their grandfather. I also have an entry for what could be her husband, John Carroll, born 1861, England, at Burns Lodging House, Glasgow.

I have had a query about this lady on here before, because I couldn't find her on the census.

Any thoughts, please?

Researching: Easton ( Renfrewshire, Dunbarton and Glasgow), Corr (Londonderry and Glasgow), Carson (Co. Down, Irvine, Ayrshire and Glasgow), Logan (Londonderry and Glasgow)

Hello Nina,

There’s some discussion about getting Hartwood records in this thread. ... 1008842119

Also, try a Google for "hartwood asylum""records" including the quotes, there aren’t many results and could be something else there.

Some interesting pictures etc on these sites. ... illage.htm ... ts_hey.htm

Hope this helps,
