Hi,
Can anyone out there help me solve this ?
My father-in-law James Rodger used to be a monumental sculptor after he was demobbed after the war, and according to him he worked for A R Muir & Sons/Co. in Old Cathcart, Glasgow. I've already looked up the company which was well known in Glasgow, and existed until 1939. He says he worked there until 1958, but can't find any record of the company existing past 1939. I'm beginning to think it might have been taken over, and changed their name.
Any ideas ?
Regards,
Daryl

Hi Daryl:
Have you tried the Mitchell for help with this? I am familiar with a U.S. publication titled 'Defunct and predecessor companies'. There may be a similar British publication, or the information may be in the historical files on Glasgow businesses.

I know of several companies in my area who were called by their original name despite changing hands several times.
The shop at the end of my Mother's road will be known for as long as I & my contemparies are around as "Boyle's" despite the fact that both brothers who owned & ran it are six feet under.
John Brown's Shipyard was always known as such & it's vacant space still referred to as "Brown's" in Clydebank despite the fact it was no longer owned by the Brown's several decades before it's eventual demise this Century.

Hi Daryl
I had a look on the old telephone directories on Ancestry , and in 1959 AR Muir and Sons Ltd, Monumental Sculptors
were still around.
Addresses:
Craigton, 4 Cemetery rd
Cathcart, 310 Clarkston rd
Netherlee, Netherlee rd
Eastwood, 239 Thornliebank rd
A few years before they were also in st Enoch's square and I also found an address for them in the Edinburgh Directory.
Hope this helps

Hi me again
As far as I can see the last time they appearred in the Glasgow phone book was 1970.
There is this in the Edinburgh gazette
http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issu ... /pages/480
which suggests the company was wound up voluntarily in 1971 . I'm sad now !

There is still a memorial place on Cemetery Road Cardonald, just beside Craigton CemeteryCraigton, 4 Cemetery rd
It's at number 26 now and called A Buchannan - but I suspect it's still the same 'firm' just bought over and renamed.
These businesses don't tend to move to far from the source of work....

Wow, Thanks to everyone who found the details regarding my father-in-law's former workplace.
I was just about to go and look in the Mitchell, at the post office directories for any reference to Muir & co./sons.
I was beginning to think it just didn't exist after 1946.
Thanks again,
Daryl
