Sweet factory Glasgow.....

Post by cocobelle » Thu Jan 26, 2006 8:08 pm

Hi,

My ggrandmother's sister was living in Glasgow & in the 1891 census she is a confectionary maker. Anyone any idea of sweet factories in the area & how you would get records, if there were any !!!!

Many thanks, Angela

Hi Angela

Welcome to Talkingscot :D

I've no idea but if (when) you have an address you might click on the "Sources" tab above then look for The Mitchell Library Glasgow and that will take you to the Virtual Mitchell - you may find a photo of where you are looking for :?:

If I remember correctly, a lot of sweetie shops made thier own 'confections' in the back shop.

I read an auto biography about a Gorbles childhood that I'm sure mentioned such things - I'm racking my brains to remember #-o .

So you may not find anything official employment in a factory, as we would know it.

Hi
There were several confectionery factories in Glasgow.
"Sweetie works" as we called them.
I can mind Nestlles in Duke street.
When the weaving industry finished in Glasgow and Paisley, a lot of the old premises got converted into sweetie and biscuit factories.
The Lambertons had a place in the Gorbals
I think the factory was in Thistle Street

There was Buchanan's Factory in Ann Street Cowcaddens closed in the 1960s. In fact they were the family who started the Rechabyte Religeous Movement in Glasgow in 1800s. try the Mitchell Library

Ps Spelling may be wrong.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but my husband is descended from Buchanans the confectioners. Was not aware of the religious connection - must investigate. Thanks for that Hudggy!

Ellen.

Don't know if this is of any help but thought I would mention it.

In the book "The Gorbals" there is a 1870 picture of Factory for
a John Gray & Co Wholesale and Export Confectioners
at 20 Commercial Road ,Makers of Scotch Marmalade,
Jams ,Orange,Lemon & Citron Peel [Candied & Drained].
We tend to think of Confectioners as Sweetie makers but they produced preserves too.

Hello cocobelle,

If it is the Gorbals area you are interested in to find the sweetie factory, then you may like to post a notice on this board. You might get some feedback.

I wish you luck. The only sweetie factory I can think of is Birrell's Milady Chocolates on the Gt Western Road at Anniesland - my mother worked there before she married.
