First time user here. Don't know proper procedure, but am researching Lambertons and John Gray & Company. Have got a lot of info on Hugh Lamberton 1819-1888. Would appreciate any hints, directions, sources. My eye was caught by Davie's post.

Thanks,
Ian

Hello Ian, and welcome to TalkingScot.

Is this the book as discussed in this thread? viewtopic.php?f=72&t=13684

If you haven’t already been there you may find information about the Lambertons and other confectionery manufacturers etc in:

British Library Newspapers 1800-1900 http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/

Google News Archive (put Glasgow in source box for Glasgow Herald 1930s to 1960s) http://news.google.com/archivesearch?as ... _scoring=a

The Edinburgh Gazette may be worth a try http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/

A separate search in Google Books (although whether viewable in full depends for some books on your location) http://www.google.com.au/webhp?complete ... 02f8e87aed

Here’s some other books with ‘Gorbals’ in the title. http://www.google.com.au/books?as_q=&nu ... n=&as_issn

Hope that helps,
Alan

This is excellent. Thanks so much, Alan. I hope to learn more about how to use this site, but already I can see that it's a fantastic resource. Again, thanks!

I beleive my Great Uncle Frank Hamilton Reeve was the Reeve of Reeve's Chocoalte. He had a son Rennie Hamilton Reeve, but thats all I have on the family - would love to expand on that or filll in more info - the family has spread far and wide over the globe with very interesting characters. Any details would be much appreciated

Hello Sarah thank you so much

Yes born in Leighton Buzzard - would have been raised as a Quaker - a lot of them seemed to go into Chocolate - famous ones Mr Fry and Mr Cadbury!- they all ( 9 brothers and sisters) had interesting religious leanings though their lives, his brother Alfred - my Grandfather- came out to Australia as did another brother Charles. The Reeves were mainly very long lived... my mother was a late baby - number 12 - when he was in his 60's.

Interesting your info as he may have a second child, as the one I know of was born in 1889 and by then he was in boarding school

1901 Census Berkhamstead Hertfordshire ( Boarding School)
Rennie H Reeve - 12

Is there a way one can get ot birth info from the other side of the world??

cheers
Mary-Jane

Hello Mary-Jane,
Interesting about the Quaker connection, since in 1881 his father was a Publican  Would seem a bit unlikely, but perhaps it was a pub that catered to members of the Society of Friends, who knows?!

It looks like he had a new wife and a new child between 1891 and 1901. In 1891 he is married to Annie, with 2 year old Rennie in the household. Rennie was also born in Glasgow, so you should be able to get both boys' birth records from the record office website at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk A search for surname Reeve, born in Glasgow City between 1888-1899 gets only the two hits: Rennie and Roy. It will cost you one credit to see that page of hits and five credits each for the birth certificates.

All the best,
Sarah
