there was indeed an ici site in powfoot

it was open till the late 1990's
you probably wont find any information on it as it was a ministry of defense site (i think)

there was (still is??) a paint (dulux) plant on the way into dumfries also

but its newer than ww2

dont know if you know this, but it was owned by nobels explosives
(the company that alfred nobel [the peace prize guy] set up to make dynamite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamite ) the first site was at ardeer, the second was powfoot
they made (and still do at ardeer as far as im aware) nitrocellulose and nitroglycerine
for propellants and other chemicals, intended for other nasty stuff :)

http://nobelprize.org/alfred_nobel/indu ... index.html

that has some cool info

also http://www.nobel-enterprises.com/ is the current company that owns the site

ASGROOMBRIDGE wrote:Hello everyone,

I have been trying to get information on the ICI factory just outside Annan I think it may have been near Powfoot. My mother worked there during the war making (or do theey distil it) ether. I cant seem to find any information in fact I dont even know what ICI stands for. Can anyone help :?:

Audrey
PS I am sure the factory was still around in the late 50's or early 60's
Exactly what this ICI site produced during WWII I'm not sure but it was an ICI site until just a few years ago, producing PET film (polyethylene terephthalate) until it was taken over by a competitor, - du Pont ????

See http://www.gasandoil.com/goc/features/fex80771.htm - but Annan not mentioned !!

See also http://www.dumfriesinsulation.co.uk/ for a passing reference !!

I know that you posted this a long time ago - but you might be interested to know that my father was the manager of the ICI factory at Powfoot during the war. He didn't talk about that time very much but I do have (somewhere) one or two bits of information about the factory and also one or two 'in house' magazines with photographs of some of the girls who worked there. Hello again. Haven't been here for a while.
I'm glad to find some info on ICI Ardeer, as I didn't know what it did. - thanks.
My Dad worked for ICI, and there is a note in his 1944 diary that he visited Ardeer in July for two days - and I wish I knew why! - Alison

Indeed there was an ICI explosives works at Powfoot and also at Ardeer (Stevenston not Ardrossan). Powfoot was involved in the manufacture of monobase granulated guncotton propellant and trinitrotoluene (TNT)?explosive.
