You've piqued my interest now. I have McBain's living in parish of Cromdale at around that time. And I come from Grantown myself.

I have to go out now - its Friday and its pub time! - but I'll have a good rummage in the morning and see if I've got any leads.

Regards

Ellen.
Hope you haven't got a hangover this morning!

See post above. Wee Jane McBain is a lost soul among my Frasers and McDonalds. Hope you can find some connection

Jean

I've only just started to look - picked up the relevant file, opened it and out fell (honestly!) a print out I've taken from the 1881 census of a family which I haven't yet fully connected to mine, living at one of the farms in the family at various times - and on it there is

Elsie McBain, age 7 !!!!!!

At Balvattan, Parish of Cromdale. Balvattan is a farm at Duthil, where most of my paternal side come from. gg granny Isabella McBain married in to the Grants, came from Kingussie area and some of her family seem to have moved up to the Duthil area during her marraige. Her parents died at another small farm very close to her in Duthil.

I believe Elsie's father William is a brother or cousin of my great great grandmother. I hadn't really done any work on establishing this yet, but now of course I'm off like a rabbit down a hole!

Got to go and get the groceries now (I guess we still must eat!) but will get dug into this in the afternoon. No rugby for the Scots to get thrashed at again this afternoon to distract me, thank goodness.

Will get back to you.

Ellen.

Hi Y'all,

My daughter's choir came second, they had a great time but got back home at 2:00am so I'm not up-to-speed this morning.

I've only conducted a first pass on Elsie and Jane McBain and hope that Davie jumps on board to help because there are alarm bells all over this pair and I suspect this would be a BEEZER for his students.

Elsie McBain/McBean isn't a very common name, Jane was born (illegitimate) in 1888 so I'm assuming that the mother was fairly young.

There are only 8 Els* M*cB*n births in the whole of Scotland between 1855 and 1881.

1 1864 MCBAIN ELSIE F FORRES MORAY 137/00 0088
2 1879 MCBAIN ELSIE MILNE F FORDYCE BANFF 153/01 0045
3 1876 MCBAIN ELSIE WYNESS F SAVOCH ABERDEEN 237/B0 0017
4 1880 MCBAIN ELSPET BELLA F RATHVEN BANFF 164/00 0119
5 1881 MCBAIN ELSPET JANE MOR F OLD MACHAR ABERDEEN 168/02 0744
6 1881 MCBAIN ELSPET MACLEAN F BOYNDIE BANFF 149/00 0028

7 1867 MCBEAN ELSIE MURRAY F OLD MACHAR ABERDEEN BURGH ABERDEEN 168/02 1173
8 1855 MCBEAN ELSPETH F AUCHTERGAVEN PERTH 330/00 0001

In reality those from 1876 can be discounted, leaving only four.

The 1881 census only yields 6 Els* McB*n:

MC BAIN, Elspet MothL <1805> Birth: Kinc Fetteresso
Census: Aber Aboyne
MC BAIN, Elspeth Head <1814> Birth: Mora Inverallan
Census: Inve Duthil
MC BAIN, Elsie Wife <1850> Birth: Aber Peterhead
Census: Aber Strichen
MC BAIN, Elsie Dau <1874> Birth: Inve Cromdale
Census: Elgn Cromdale
MC BAIN, Elsie W. Dau <1876> Birth: Aber Ellon
Census: Aber Ellon
MC BAIN, Elspet Milne GDau <1879> Birth: Banf Fordyce
Census: Banf Fordyce

The one in Cromdale looks the best bet.

None of these M*c*B*n children were registered.

Back to the census were I did a search for Faebuie, as you said only a few houses, I'm assuming the various Frasers were yours. But, a few listings away there is:

No help at all, no images for the children's births. So onto Jane McBain's birth in 1888. There are a few. The first I chose was the one for Cromdale.

This certificate shows two transcribed illegitimate births to two unmarried Elsie's in two different places. One for Isabella FRASER Grant at 1 Grant Street, Woodside to Elsie Grant, at home, Domicil [sic] Wester Lettoch and Jane McBain at South Street Grantown to Elsie McBain, Domestic Servant, Domicil [sic] Faebuie.

There is a RCC entry across (effectively joining) both entries.

Problem is that there is no sign of Isabella Grant around the area in 1891 and no deaths.

This seems to be Elsie Grant in 1881:

Her mother was Isabella Fraser.

Elsie Grant gave the address 1 Grant Street, Woodside (in Old Machar) in 1881 INFURIATINGLY we have:

Elsie McBain gives her address as South Street, Grantown (as far as I can see it's the same enumeration district as Cromdale) where in 1881 we find:

See why I started to hunt for the Grants as well as McBain's????

As I said this is a first pass and there is an annoying amount of missing images.

There is no sign of a likely Isabella (Fraser) Grant in 1891 and no deaths before 1891. There is an Elsie Grant age 27 still staying at Wester Lettoch in 1891.

There is a 21 year old, domestic servant, Elsie McBain in Banff who gives Grantown, Moray as her birth place but even using five years either side of 1870 can't see a trace of her in 1881.

If Elsie Grant's mother, Isabella Fraser turns out to be a sister to James Fraser who married your Euphemia Grubb or a sister of the father, William who married Isabella Cameron, then I strongly suspect a wee cover-up of an illegitimate birth.

So sorry, wee Jane's still on top of the scanner but she MAY be related.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Well done to your daughter's choir.

In the 1881 census the Frasers at no 2 and Jane Fraser at No 3 are not mine(not at the moment, anyway) My Frasers are at no 5. Isabella, her son Donald and Grandson John McDonald(son of Ann Fraser, Isabella's daughter)

As you say Isabella Fraser(m.s. Cameron) was married to a William Fraser(not the one at no 2). I have not found a daughter Isabella born to this couple. Children found are:-

Mary Fraser or Cameron b. Nov 1841
James Fraser or Cameron b. 20 Apr 1845
Ann Fraser or Cameron b. 25 Jun 1847
Donald Fraser b. 13 May 1849
Alexander Fraser b. 12 Jul 1852

As far a William Fraser, himself, is concerned, the only sister I have found for him is Anne Fraser.

Ellenavon may be able to shed some light on this lot as her Elsie McBain is the one living at Balvattan.

The above James b. 1845 is the husband of Euphemia Grubb who in 1891 is living at one of the Faebuie Cottages, a widow, with four or her own children and wee Jane McBain.

The Frasers will be the death of me :?

Thanks for this. Ties in with some of my findings. Infuriatingly I',m at work and not home till tomorrow night. (Work away from home most of the time). So will post the info I have then.

What a pity we have to work for a living.

Congrats to your daughter and her choir Andy, you must be a proud dad.

Regards

Ellen.

Andy

You said "see why I started to hunt for Grants as well as McBain????"

I can't see why from your findings, but is it anything to do with the good doctor and his wife having a child born 7 Sep 1888 (John ?Blane? Grant) whose birth is recorded just before Jane McBain's birth?

Hope you can sort this lot out.

Just to let you know I'll be away for a couple of weeks. Set off tomorrow for Edinburgh then up to Aberdeen and over to Grantown on Spey. No prizes for guessing why!!

Found the Faebuie cottages on the map so they will be visited amongst other places.

Going armed with wellies, shovel, flask and blanket, just in case!!

Ashamed to say no progress to report

Andy - what do you think to the 29 yr old Elsie McBean visiting her sister Maggie who is working for a family of Grants who come from the GRantown area but are living in Kingussie at 1881?

A contender for Jane's mum?

All of my McBains/MacBains/McBeans/MacBeans are constantly mistranscribed.

Because of the lack of certification of any of my Balvattan McBains, I still haven't been able to verify that they are mine, although am fairly sure they are connected, probably nephew of my gggrandmother.

Jean is going to be disappointed in us!!

Very small amount of progress today folks.

Have found one of the elusive McBain births, Elsie's sister Marjory. Its the bloomin parish boundary changes again. She's registered in Inverallan. Still no trace of Elsie's though.

Have the parents marraige cert William and Christina. Still not verified that they're connected to me, more work to do.

But no further with young Elsie yet, sorry.
