Commonwealth War Graves in Highlands

Post by Orlaith17 » Fri Aug 17, 2018 2:06 am

Hi all. Whilst enjoying days out here in the Highlands, we sometimes visit cemeteries and see CWGC signs. We visited a churchyard near Laggan a few days ago, and there were several war graves, mostly local men, but also a Polish one. We've found a fair few military graves in the area, both local and foreign. If anyone is looking for a relative in a Highland cemetery. Feel free to contact me, as I'm happy to get pics of graves for anyone searching.

A 'past time' enjoyed by my family too. In fact the boys dismiss any graveyard without a war graves sign as being uninteresting!
Some fascinating stories engraved in the stones.
I should really get my daughter to start a list of all the ones she has photos of too.

I have taken photos of War Graves when wandering around Cemeteries myself.

But, I send them to britishwargraves.co.uk - They are building up quite a huge database of photographs, and they send them to anyone who asks for a relatives war grave photo (if they have it yet) absolutely free.

They are always glad to receive any photos, or indeed any help with cemetery photography, the site is run by Mick McCann. There is a link half way down their home page if you do want to supply photos or help

See also the Scottish War Graves Project website:

Here is Laggan Parish Churchyard as an example.

I don't see the Polish one there - it looks like the contributor of these photos didn't find that one. Was it that Parish Churchyard that you were in at Laggan?

The Commonwealth War Grave Commission lists 6 graves at Laggan Parish Churchyard.

All the best,

Now that's good to know that there's somewhere to send them too.

Unfortunately I can't access the Scottish one, my internet settings block it saying the site contains pornography =; #-o
