Robin Lairs @ Cardonald Cemetery and beyound

Post by weeknightingale » Sun Jan 03, 2010 5:06 pm

\:D/ In your research have you come across the surname ROBIN?
In search of grave sites in Glasgow, Scotland and England. [sherlock]

My grandfather was: [scotland-flag]
William Robin, Engineer (1874-1963) of Pollokshields, Glasgow.
His father was William Robin, Master Gunpowder Manufacturer (1848-1874).
His grandfather was Robert Robin, Wine & Spirit Merchant(1818-1875).
Robert Robin had siblings by the names of: Isabella (1851-), Margaret, Matthew(1857-), Janet(1858-1929), Elizabeth,

WALTER, Leather & Hide Merchant retired in Bridge of Allan (1861-1936), James, and John. Three family members took a leisure boat trip on the Clyde and drowned in 1877. [drowning]

My grandfather's mother was Jane Neilson daughter of Iron Master John Neilson of Oakbank Iron Works who was James 'Hot Blast' Beaumont Neilson's brother. [kettle] (edited)

Sometimes this really gets very confusing!

My reason for searching is that I recently got in contact with my cousin who is looking for his father's burial site. My thinking was if we could find where our grandparents graves are we may find our uncle's resting place.

Oh forgot to mention that a very dear person (retired British Merchant Navy Seaman) in Glasgow found a Robin Lair at Cardonald Cemetery. My Aunt Hannah (1909-1932), two Uncles who died in infancy, John McIntyre second husband of my Grand-Aunt Catherine who resided in Dornoch are buried there.

Any other information or suggests would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
Great news! This is an update: We found my Uncle's burial site. By way of one of my many posts the grand-daughter of my mother's youngest brothers e-mailed me. Her mother my cousin mentioned the cemetery and sure enough after contacting them we had confirmation.

He is buried in the Northern Section of the Tottenham cemetery White Hart Lane in Tottenham, UK which is not far from where I once lived as a very little girl many many years ago. His son my cousin who lives in Australia will in the future visit. A long awaited visit after many frustrating attempts of finding the resting place.

Anyone familiar with that particular cemetery any tips.

So never give up you never know when you may get an e-mail with good news! =D>

Great news Karola,

The sad story of the triple drowning you previously mentioned appeared in The Dundee Courier & Argus and Northern Warder, Tuesday, September 25, 1877. Did you ever get to see it?

A map of the cemetery showing the northern section.

Thank you for your information!
I have not seen the actual newspaper article. One person on genealogy.com quoted a brief statement regarding the drowning. It must have been an event since I believe that area was a very popular holiday and weekend place to visit. Also it was a tragedy for the family since my great-great-grandfather had already lost his eldest son. Thank you though for the information regarding the newspaper.

Also I did look up on the maps for Tottenham Cemetery. I don't know when my cousin will be visiting the UK. His son will be getting married so the trip may be delayed until after that. This all very exciting!

It is always wonderful when some one contributes some input. Sometimes I feel that there is no one out there reading any of these entries. I guess I am wrong lots of people do care and are reading!

That’s ok Karola.

Here’s the newspaper image. Take a copy as it may not be there forever.

Hello Alan,
THANK YOU! O:)

Thank you for the link. It is so interesting to actually see the newspaper article!
I have the death records of the three victims from Scotland's People. All the little bits of information
really helps round out the stories about our ancestors. Seems they may have been on a fool-hardy adventure.

I did not know the Uncle was from Canada thought he was living in New York.
Here is the piece that I found on a forum by a researcher who came across this on searching some information on the Robin family.
She was researching and corresponding I believe with a lady in Glasgow, Scotland who was researching 'one surname' Robin.
"Glasgow Herald 25 September 1877 -- Suddenly, by upsetting of a small boat on the Clyde at Langbank on 22nd inst, William ROBIN aged 75 of Rockville Center, Long Island USA. Also Matthew ROBIN aged 20 and James ROBIN, aged 14, sons of the late Robert ROBIN, Juniper Bank House, Langbank"
They are distant cousins once twice or thrice removed or however that is calculated. I was able to communicate with another lady in Australia who has done much genealogy research regarding her branch of the Robin family. It is all so exciting.
I often wonder if our ancestors are having a wee laugh at all our endeavors to find them out!
What a small world!

Thanks again,
Karola

Back again Karola,

You’ll find the Glasgow Herald entries right here, just zoom in as far as it will go.

Alan,
You are a Sweetheart. What an interesting find! Thank you again.
Reading the articles really brings these ancestors to life even though
I'm reading about their deaths.

I'm adding this to my collection.

Now I'm inspired to start searching again for more genealogy information on my family.
My tree is growing. I enjoy every moment reading and searching. Happy hunting.

Thank you!
Karola

P. S Waving from Southern California. Just noticed that you are in Australia. My cousin lives in Brisbane. My son had a school buddy that was attending a semester at Griffith (?) Uni and spent a week visiting Queensland last year. They had a fantastic time camping and driving the coast! My son loved what he saw of Australia. :)
