Hello -
I'm wondering if someone who has a copy of the East Stirlingshire MI book could do a lookup for me on Larbert Cemetery. I know there's a monument there for my relatives, but I'm trying to find out exactly what it says. I thought about buying the MI book, but it's only one real relative in the Stirlingshire area (no descendants, and everyone else is based in Clackmannanshire), so it seems a little pricey. If anyone is able to help do the one lookup for this one family, I'd appreciate it.
Thank you.

P.S. The monument I'm interested in is for Capt. John Paterson of the East India Company. I know his parents John Paterson and Jean Harrower (Jean is my relative) are also buried there, and I believe the monument mentions the death of infant children as well. Thanks!

Re: Help - lookup Larbert Cemetery
Hello Kirsty,
I've had a look at the East Stirlingshire MI Book and Capt. John Paterson had a stone in Larbert Old Parish Churchyard, not Larbert Cemetery. (Two completely separate places).
According to this publication, there once upon a time was a stone as it's listed in the Ancient Monument Book, Vol. 1 but was not seen by them when they surveyed the Churchyard in July of 1969.
The MI listed is as follows:
Captain John Paterson E.I.C.S., last survivor of family of John Paterson of Carron, brothers and sisters, erected 1827
So unfortunately, no other names are listed.
There is no mention of a stone to John Paterson & Jean Harrower either, so it looks as though no stone survives for them either.
I checked Larbert East Churchyard & Bothkennar Churchyard as well but nothing there either.
Sorry!
Anne

Re: Help - lookup Larbert Cemetery
Thank you so much for the lookup, Anne!
I knew about the monument for John Paterson the son, but I'd really hoped that it might specify the dates of his other family members. Disappointing for my research because if it had specified some dates, I might have been able to expand back one more generation in my direct line. Oh, well. I'm obviously not going to figure it out that way. Still, I'm extremely grateful for the lookup. And thanks for clarifying the difference between Larbert Cemetery and Larbert Old Parish Churchyard. From a distance of half a world away, they can sound a bit the same.
cheers,
Kirsty

Re: Help - lookup Larbert Cemetery
My pleasure Kirsty!
A rough guide to the difference between Cemeteries & Churchyards - most Cemeteries weren't established until the 1880's, so looking for burials prior to this time would be in Churchyards. (This is only Stirlingshire and neighbouring counties - in Glasgow, The Necropolis and Sighthill Cemetery were opened earlier, 1840'ish)
If you want to have a wee look at Larbert Churchyard, go to Multimap (http://www.multimap.com) and key NS855822 into the 'find a map' field, then zoom in.
Anne
P.S. To see where Larbert Cemetery is, key in NS871835. (Just to add to the confusion, Larbert Cemetery is actually in Stenhousemuir!)

Re: Help - lookup Larbert Cemetery
I was eager to take a peek, but apparently Multimaps has been absorbed into Bing Maps. I tried to find any place to put in a map reference, but it apparently no longer exists on the merged website (arghh!!). Oh, well. Thanks anyway. Perhaps I can find it via Google earth...

Re: Help - lookup Larbert Cemetery
Never mind Multimap then, try Google Maps (not Google Earth)
The Churchyard is at the junction of the B905 (Denny Road) and the A9 (Stirling Road).
The Cemetery is on Muirhead Road, Stenhousemuir off the B905 (which is now called King Street).
Anne
P.S. They're probably easy enough to find on Google Earth but I can't give you details for that. I un-installed Google Earth a while ago after realising I was spending hours gallivanting all over the world while the ironing pile was getting bigger, and bigger .........!
