I have a Scotlandspeople burial record which is headed "By Order of the Managers of the Church Yard of Arbroath" can anyone tell me what church yard this would refer to?
It gives my ancestor Elizabeth Ogilvie as having been buried "4 feet south of John Sturrock's stone" row 33 (it sounds like a large churchyard burial ground). I am hoping to find someone familiar with burial documents from Arbroath in the 1850s who can help.
regards
Wendy

Re: Churchyard of Arbroath?
Hello Wendy,
Judging from this page Arbroath Eastern and Arbroath Western Cemeteries appear to date from after the 1850s and that seems to leave Arbroath Abbey Churchyard as the most likely within Arbroath. It was also, it seems, known as the Abbey Burying Ground. https://www.deceasedonline.com/servlet/ ... id=6443282
Arbroath Abbey Churchyard is in the centre of Arbroath as you can see in this street view. http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&i ... ,,0,-14.33
Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Churchyard of Arbroath?
Checked the SAFHS Graveyard Search and as Alan says most likely it refers to Abbey Churchyard as there are no other churchyards listed other than two older burial grounds (Hospital Field and St Mary's Chapel).
