Larkhall Cemetery?

Post by pckl » Sat Nov 03, 2012 1:37 am

Hi all

I'd just like some advice, and if it comes to it, a look at the monumental inscriptions for Larkhall, please.

My Great Great Grandfather, Charles Leslie died at 108 Meadowhill, Larkhall on the 12th June 1921. I know the Leslie family were Roman Catholic, so I'm not sure if he would be buried there.

Charles' wife, Agnes Carroll died in St Joseph's House, Glasgow on the 12th June 1943 (Spooky date for both as they actually married then too!) but by this time the Leslies had moved away to the small village of Twechar, so I doubt she would be with him.

It seems like all the Leslies from Larkhall are all related. My direct line married into the McLean family, and I think they would definitely be there.

I really hope someone can help me with this.

Thank you, Callum

Sorry to get your hopes up :) but I am a bit far away to take a look.
I hope there is someone on the forum who is more able to help you with your request.

Have you checked http://www.memento-mori.co.uk ? they have many Lanarkshire cemeteries listed.
Larkhall isn't among them but there's a St Josephs in Airdrie, but a nearer RC one would be St Patricks in New Stevenston [not listed]

I would expect his wife to be buried with him - famly lairs are usually used even if it does involve a journey back to 'home'.

As she died in Glasgow I had a quick look at the google archive for the Glasgow Herald but no sign of a death notice 12 - 15 June.

I think there's a CD with MI's for lanarkshire - hopefully a kind Talking Scottie has one?

Hi WilmaM

Thanks for that link! That's a great site, I didn't know of that one.

I've had a look through the graveyards closest to Larkhall, but unfortunately I can't see any of my family on there.

Thanks for looking for a death notice too!

Callum :)

Callum

http://www.scottish-monumental-inscriptions.com/

Have three CDs, of Monument photos with transcriptions, for Larkhall Cemetery, I have the first 2 disks but there was only one LESLIE, not your one, this ones from 1997 so can't give out details. According to the website disk 3 covers 1929 - 2011 so your guy is unlikely to be in that section.

Sorry can't be any more help than that.

Thanks for that link, John.

So no Leslies at all for that time peroid? I'm shocked...I thought there may be one lurking around there!

Unless they just don't have headstones? If that is the case, where would I have to go to see the burial records?

If not, looks like I have to look into RC churches in the area.

Thanks!

As you know the date of death you could contact South Lanarkshire Council.

http://www.southlanarkshire.gov.uk/info ... remation/8

I've never used them so don't know if there is a cost or not these days. But worth a try.

Just thought I'd reply to this post - Sorry I forgot to reply.

I did e-mail South Lanarkshire and they have proved helpful - tenfold!

Charles and Agnes are both buried at Larkhall, with some of their grandchildren and one great grandchild. Unfortunately they don't have a headstone, but I know the plots and where they are. I hope to get up there in the Spring and pay my respects to all the family at Larkhall.

Thanks all! :D
