I am hoping someone can help me locate the cemetery or cemeteries where my Great Grandparents may be buried. They both were born, lived and died in Glasgow and were not Roman Catholic. I wrote to the Glasgow City Council several months ago and was re-directed to the Glasgow City Archives, Mitchell Library but have not yet had a reply.
I have searched for burial locations through obits and have searched www.memento-mori.co.uk, under every cemetery that I could identify within Glasgow, but no luck. I live in Canada and will be visiting Glasgow in September of this year and was hoping to be able to visit the cemetery where they were buried.
My Great Grandmother was Mary Donaldson, b 25 June 1830 died 12 April 1876 at 48 Port Dundas Rd. Glasgow. Her husband was William McLean b circa 1822 died 27 March 1899 at 23 Walkinshaw St. Glasgow. One of their sons Alexander McLean b 1861 died 3 Nov 1906 at 23 Walkinshaw St. Glasgow.
I also know that one of their children died at 3mo. on 14 Mar. 1855, and his death record revealed that he was buried in Southern Cemetery (name James McLean). At that time they were living at 5 Canal St. Glasgow. Can someone tell me if Southern Cemetery is the Southern Necropolis Cemetery and would this be a clue as to where my great grandparents may be buried?
My Great Grandfather William McLean re-married in 1878 to an Agnes Cormie, so he could also be buried with her. She died 2 January 1898 at 23 Walkinshaw Rd.
I am not sure where else to look or what cemeteries are near Canal St., Port Dundas Rd. or Walkinshaw St.?
I would appreciate any help that you can give me in locating their gravesite.

Hi,
Can't help with the possible cemeteries, but just to let you know the Mitchell Library has been going through some major refurbishment work recently, Which has affected all the Genealogy areas - so I would guess that the Glasgow Archives are well behind in dealing with queries.

Thank you for your reply. It has been 3 months, so I will still hold onto hope that they will be able to help. I wasn't sure where else to look.

drow, the Southern is the Southern Necropolis, south of the river. Sighthill & The Necropolis are probably the nearest to Port Dundas.

Thank you for that information. I now have a place to start looking for the actual grave site. Am I right in assuming that the Mitchell Library is the only source that would have grave site location information or does the actual cemetery have any information? Where I live here in Ontario, many of the cemetery offices have this information.

Hi Drew
The cemetery should hold the records of who was interned there. Whether they are able to provide a search facility is up to them, but from previous readings most cemeteries don't have an on line search facility.

Re: Looking for grave site in Glasgow
Hi Johnnie: Thank you for that information. I had written several months ago to Glasgow City Council and received a quick reply back from Land and Environmental Services advising me that “following the completion of a multi agency digitisation project, the responsibility for genealogical searches has passed to Glasgow City Archives, The Mitchell Library”. I then wrote the Glasgow City Archives and would like to take this opportunity to thank them, as just this week I heard back from them and I can’t tell you how happy and grateful to them that I am. They not only found the cemetery and lair #s for me (Southern Necropolis, Western Section), but they also were very helpful in advising that in terms of finding the lairs within the cemetery that Bereavement Services offer a courtesy on-site service to help locate the exact position of a grave and that the lair number and section details should be sufficient for them to locate this. They also provided me with the contact information of les@glasgow.gov.uk so that I could contact them to set something up. The cost for burial information was just 10L. I may have had to wait several months, and I can appreciate that they are very busy, but the wait was well worth it and the archivist who handled my enquiry was very helpful and quick to respond to my questions.
Thanks to you and all who responded to my post, and many thanks to the Mitchell Library.
I can’t wait to visit Scotland this year!
Thanks to you and all who responded to my post, and many thanks to the Mitchell Library.
