OCR MADNESS

Post by wini » Mon Dec 04, 2006 11:08 am

This is all very, very funny.

Where do I sign up to learn this new language? Hope it can be done on the Internet..

I've just had the wildest thought (my family keep threatening to do something about these  )

Maybe if they used the same system to scan the old Wills and Testaments written in old Scots or Secretary, it would miraculously translate them :D

 Well, I did say it WAS a wild thought.

Hi Mary,
Here's a slightly wilder thought that just might work:
Have them scan the old wills as you said, then rescan the scans back to the original!! :D

Well, at least it would give two versions to compare... 8)

Keep up the wild thoughts,
Sarah

Hello all,

I sent a question to Ancestry before posting my thoughts yesterday. Their reply was received a short time ago:

Dear John,

We appreciate your message.

We have a team of humans that transcribe the records.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Dear All

Please note they did not specify which continent and what the root language was :!:

There have been concerns about Polish workers seeking better positions over here but I don't think the transcriptions sounded Polish.
Perhaps when it is translated into Cyrillic script it suffers slightly.

Note also that they did not say that the team of humans were the only means of transcription. It seems a carefully worded note intentionally left ambiguous. Or maybe this is just the cynical linguist talking

Sarah

With an Italian accent peeking through at the end. Two whole vowels in one word is simply wasteful
