Scott - Covington/Carnwath 1841 census

Post by Pepper9 » Sat Jul 30, 2011 11:30 am

I wonder if anyone can help please? I am looking for the family of Adam Scott b 1802 Covington in the 1841 census. He was married to Isabella and had 4 sons John, Robert, Hugh and Adam. I have found them in the 1851 census.

Many thanks for any help.

Phil

Hi Phil and [TS_welcome]
When you say you are looking for the family of Adam Scott do you mean his parentage or his descendants or anybody connected to him?
Was he with his family in the 1851 Census-is this where you found his birthplace & age? Where were the family in the 1851 Census?
Scotts are one of my main lines however they are from the Borders /Midlothian area until my Grandpa moved west after WW1.

What was his occupation? Do you have him on any Stat Reg-after 1855-children's marriage, death certificate which would help confirm his parentage.
Do you have any idea where/when they were married-I cannot find any info for him on Family Search excepting a submission which are as accurate as the person submitting knows-which at times can be way off. As one who hold her hands up for submitting less than accurate info to Family Search in the past.
I cannot find the Family in the 1841 Census in Lanark using Freecen either.

Hi Joette

We believe that Adam was born in Covington in 1802 to William and Marion Scott. Adam married Isabella unknown b abt 1809 Carnwathh and they had John about 1832 Carnwath, Hugh abt 1834 Carnwath, Robert abt 1836 Carnwath, Adam about 1838 Biggar, Marion abt 1846 New Monkland and Isbaella abt 1849 New Monkland. They were living at Sykeside, Newhouse, Old Monkland in 1851. we know that John married Mary Gateshill in Newcastle in 1858 but have not been able to find any more about the other children of Adam and Isabella.

We are looking for any information about the family before and after 1851 (1841 and 1861 census). In Family Search we have found other children to William and Marion and the naming patterns lead us to think that this is the right family. We have not been able to find any other baptisms etc through Scotland's People due to the nature of the surname.

Thank you for any help.

We believe that Adam was a colliery labourer and his sons were coalminers.

I wonder if this is wee Isabella with her Aunt at Covington in 1861. There is a marriage of a Janet Scott and Robert Brownlie in 1826 at Covington.

Janet Brownlee 64 born Covington
Isabella Scott 11 born Airdrie, niece
William Vassie 47
John Floy 40
Thomas Henry 18

Annette

I also thought the mother was Isabella Rae but now I'm not so sure. It looks as though she was also known as Elizabeth and she and her husband Adam had a few children at Jedburgh. I can't find any of your Adam's children born at Jedburgh.

I think this may be Adam with Elizabeth/Isabella Rae at Roxburgh in 1851 -

Adam Scott 39 born Eccles, Berwick
Betsy Scott 37
Jane Scott 13
Catherine Scott 10
Martha Scott 8
Elisabeth Scott 6
Walter Scott 4
George Scott 2

Regards,
Annette
