Thanks for that AndrewP, I tried to find Elizabeth Passmore on the 1871 census and gave up. I was interested in the 1871 census because on this thread Nelmit said living up the same close as the Passmores were

Francis Flanagan 43 Sawyer born Ireland
Jane Flanagan 40 born Ireland
Thomas Flanagan 12 born Ireland

That does seem like too much of a coincidence for there not to be a connection. I did find a lot of the Passmores in the 1881 census but thanks for the 1871 details. Did you see the Flannigans on there and what address ? Thanks

Hi Ailsa,

Yes, they are at the same address (same close), but are two pages apart on the 1871 census; eight households apart.

In the 1871 census, the easiest person to search for is Cormick Passmore - there is only one in Scotland. He shows up in Registration District 644/10, Enumeration District 117, on Page 5. There you find the whole family (household schedule number 22) - the mother is there as Eliza, hence why you won't have found her by searching for Elizabeth.

In the 1871 census, search for Francis Flanigan, and you will get two results. Select the one in Registration District 644/10, Enumeration District 117, and it will take you to page 3, where you will find Francis with his wife and son (household schedule 14).

For these searches, use the exact spellings shown above to find them.

For 1881, to find the Passmores, you need to search for Cormack Passmore. When searching, I used Corm*ck Passmore; and Fran Flan*g*an to allow for spelling variations. This can produce more potential results, but should allow for the variations that you are likely to find for these names.

Another very interesting household in Glasgow in the 1881 census has Jas and Ann Flannigan, and son Thomas (22), and lodger Mary Passmore (26) born Ireland. That Mary matches the Mary in the 1871 census that I mentioned in the earlier post, then aged 16 in her parents' household. Mary is described as a clothes dealer - the same occupation as given for her father on Cormack Passmore's death certificate. Jas Flannigan is indexed as age 56; in my opinion the census page says age 54. Do your search for this page by seeking Jas Flannigan (56). Later I now see this is the first household that you referred to in the first post of this topic.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thanks for that info AndrewP

I printed out the census for Francis Flanigan in 1871. I may just have to be content with what i've got to be honest.
Son Thomas Flannigan married Bridget Devine address 1 South Stirling St Gorbals on Dec 1882.His mother Ann Flannigan m.s Cairnan died 55 in March 1882 at 34 Rose St Gorbals. They had baby Ann (my grandmother) in May 1886 born 1 South Stirling St Gorbals. The elusive James Flannigan died at South Stirling St in September 1898 (supposedly 55!). I know as much as i'm going to know as regards whereabouts in Ireland they are from.
Thanks for all the help to all at TS.

Hi WilmaM,

Looks like John Macluskey, Annie Devine and Martin Devine (Think the Annie and Martin are Bridget's siblings). :D

Pity - was hoping a sibling or cousin had popped into the picture

Hi All,

Over the weekend i realised i don't have any record of James Flannigan on a 1891 census. I have his son Thomas living with the family of his wife Bridget in 1 South Stirling St. There are a few possibles two of which i have chosen which are wrong (i think)
1891

FLANNIGAN, JAMES (Census 1891 644/11 031/11 024) looks like 94 Florence St can't read the occupation Maltster? 49 born Ireland with wife Sarah born Wigtownshire.

1891 FLANNIGAN, JAMES (Census 644/12 100/ 2) page 2 of 14 maybe a hostel he is 69 chainmaker born Edinburgh.

Not much luck i can't go through them all!

Hi Ailsa,

There is a good possibility of him being the 66 year old sawyer, a widower living on his own in Airdrie in the 1891 census.

Hi AndrewP,

I suppose he could have went to Airdrie for some reason - although by the time he died in 1898 he's in 1 South Stirling St with Thomas and Bridget.
