If anyone can help by having a look at the below James Flannigans i would be grateful. His wife was Ann and a son Thomas maybe more.
I have paid for the one at the bottom and it does not appear to be him. I have him as age 56 in the 1881 census in Rose St Govan.

Hi Ailsa,
The ancestry transcriptions and parish names don't exactly agree with your SP results, no surprise
The Bridgeton one age 40 is a shoemaker, wife Ann, 30, son John, 5
The MIlton one age 40 is a labourer, wife Bridget Mccaffery
There is one spelt "Flanaghan", age 45 in Hutchesontown, a labourer, wife Ann, 30, children James 10, John 5, Sarah Ann, 3
The one in Calton age 45 is a coal dealer, wife Bridget 40, children Bridget 15, Roseann 10
Hutchesontown age 47 is a labourer, a lodger in the Docherty household, no other Flannigans in the house.
The 48 year old in Govan Church is an Iron Ship Builder, wife Ann 45, children Ann 23, Mary 18, Christina 16, James 14, Jane 12, Theodry 10, Catherine 8, John 24?

No sign anywhere of the Thomas who was with him in 1881. Since they were all born in Ireland, are you sure they were in Scotland by 1871?

Regards
Sarah

Hi,

Carol, It looks like a good match - but no Thomas who would have been born c1859 going by his age of 22 on the 1881 census . He may have been else where on census night. Does it say whether they were all born in Ireland?

Sarah, I am looking at census for ideas because James does seem to be quite old to start a new life in Scotland. The annoying thing is the last one on the list which i downloaded in Hutchesontown which doesn't seem to fit has neighbours called Passmore which was the family name of James' sister Elizabeth's husband !

Thanks for the help,

Ailsa

Hi Annette,

Ann's maiden name was Cairnan on her death cert but Kearnan on the son Thomas's marriage cert.

Going back to Carole's search in 1861 - i done a search for Thomas and came up with the below. Only one is the same reg district - that is no 4. If anyone can have a look.

1 1861 FLANAGAN THOMAS M 2 BRIDGETON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 086/00 003
2 1861 FLANAGAN THOMAS M 0 BLYTHSWOOD GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/06 017/00 004
3 1861 FLANAGAN THOMAS M 3 ANDERSTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/08 037/00 009
4 1861 FLANAGAN THOMAS M 2 GOVAN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 646/01 016/00 027
5 1861 FLANIGAN THOMAS M 2 BRIDGETON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 049/00 004
6 1861 FLANIGAN THOMAS M 1 CALTON (GLASGOW) GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/04 009/00 017
7 1861 FLANNAGAN THOMAS M 3 HIGH CHURCH GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/02 101/00 002

Ailsa,

The 1861 census that I posted isn't them. Ann and both children were born in Scotland. On your 1881 census James, Ann and Thomas were all born in Ireland. Will keep looking!

Living up the same close as Elizabeth Passmore in 1871 is this family -

Francis Flanagan 43 Sawyer born Ireland
Jane Flanagan 40 born Ireland
Thomas Flanagan 12 born Ireland

Frustrating that Francis has the same occupation as James - I suppose he could be another brother but I can't find any trace of him after 1871.
If it wasn't for Jane I would say this was your James using a middle name - I've seen this before with Irish names.

Have you found a death entry for James?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

I do have his death cert and he is named as James Flannigan Wood Sawyer died 2/09/1898 age 55 widower of Ann Kearnin address 1 South Stirling St Gorbals. T. flannigan is the witness - i assume Thomas.
Thomas is the right age as well on your 1871 census. Elizabeth Passmore had a son Francis who was a witness on her death cert - maybe Francis was another brother as you suggest.
That makes me think that they were in Scotland in 1871 - but maybe not Glasgow. Back to more searching :D
