Anyone possess 1871 Census for Ayr locale on CD?

Post by q98 » Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:32 am

Looking for a McCREADIE family in vicinity of Ayr with at least two sons; James (b. circa 1862) and Hugh (b. circa 1865); i.e. approximately 9 and 6 years of age respectively at Census time.

Both died as a result of an explosion (9th September 1898) at Drumley Pit, Annbank (6 miles east of Ayr). James was killed outright while brother Hugh deceased 3 days later. James left a widow and 6 ( I believe) children while Hugh was single.

There were many McCreadies in Ayrshire around this time but my records do not hold a family with sons of these ages nor names. From the Census information, I can locate James' immediate family (parents, siblings), marriage and children, etc.

Thank you.

Hi Jim,

According to somebody at Ancestry they were the sons of James Mccreadie, shoemaker and Martha Clark and the igi confirms Hugh was born at Stevenson. There appears to be a newspaper index card giving that info and that Hugh was married to Janet Thomson.

Still looking for 1871 census although I can find them both in 1891.

Regards,
Annette

Thanks nelmit
The "Scotsman" reported Hugh as single. This James McCreadie & Martha Clark are new to me. I wonder whose son James was? Mmmm, this genealogy is never ending is it?

Tks agn.

Jim

I am sure this is them in 1871 at Tarbolton -

William Clark 55
Jane Clark 48
Martha Clark 26 born Ayr
Ann Clark 17
Mary Clark 15
Grace Clark 7
Hugh Clark 21
Joseph Clark 11
James Clark 9
Hugh Clark 5 Grandson, born Stevenson
William Clark 3
John Clark 2 Mo

The census says James age 9 is the son of William but he is definitely Martha's son. Looks like William age 3 is Martha's illegitimate son although she did marry James Mccreadie in 1863.

Annette

Cathrine Bell 30 born Ireland
??Abeth Bell 10
??T Bell 5
James Mccready 16 shoemaker, born Ireland
