Jane Fitchet/t

Post by car » Wed Oct 16, 2013 8:36 pm

Since losing everything when my pc crashed I have been going through my paper family history double checking everything.

Jane Fitchet(t)is causing a few headaches, to say the least, and I am beginning to wonder if I can't see the wood for the trees!

Jane Fitchet(t) born about 1845 d1897- parents James Fitchet b1813 d1874 and Margaret Wilkie Grant b1813 d1895

Jane was unmarried and had four children - one died as an infant.

I have Jane on the 1881 census with her three sons in Dundee. Also on the 1891 census, Dundee, with two sons, two nephews and a niece.

I have her mother on the 1881 census in Dundee with a daughter Elizabeth. I found Margaret on Find my Past - she is indexed under Margret.

The informant on the father, James, death certificate (in Glasgow) is signed by John Fitchett, son, address in Dundee. (I have John's marriage cert.Dundee, and one of the witnesses is Betsy, which would tie in with the Elizabeth on the 1881 census.)

Hope you are still with me.....

The reason for all the info above is that I cannot find any of them prior to 1881. I have plenty of info after 1881. Apart from James' death in Glasgow in 1874 and the 1881 census for John(Durham, England) everything else is Dundee.

I have tried ScotlandsPeople, FREECEN and FindMyPast. I just cannot find any Fitchet/Fitchett that marry up. I could understand a misindex but surely not for so many people over so many years. The death certs for James, Margaret and Jane are easy to find and the informants are close relatives. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I even checked out the passenger lists on FindMyPast - just on the off chance!

Two of Jane's sons had Langlands as a middle name and one of them married under that name - I checked that - no joy. Same with the elder son, he had Robertson as a middle name and married under that name. No joy there either.

I'm sure I must be missing something obvious somewhere - but where?

Sorry for such a long post, just trying to get all the points down. Hopefully someone will manage to get to the end....
Regards

Christine

Hi Christine

1871 has Margret Grant age 58 and Elizabeth Fitchie age 22 at St Andrew, Dundee.

Not quite sure of this one because of Jean's age but I feel this must be them in 1851 at Dundee -

James Fitchie 38 Iron Turner
Margret Fitchie 38
Jean Fitchie 11
James Fitchie 8
William Fitchie 5
Elizabeth Fitcher 2
John Fitchie 1 Mo

1841 can be viewed at FREECEN where they are Fitchie again.

Here is Jean in 1871 at 61 Derby St, St Clements -

Jean Fitchie 26
George Robertson 8
Charles Langlands 2

Looks like Peter is with his father in 1871.

All the census records can be viewed at SP.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Christine,

Do you have the birth certificates for:
  • George Andrew Robertson Fitchet in 1862 in Mains
  • Christina Langlands Fitchet in 1866 in Dundee
  • Peter Langlands Fitchet in 1867 in Dundee
  • Charles Fitchie in 1869 in Dundee
After checking many variants, I eventually found them in the 1871 census. It looks like the children were under their (?)fathers' surnames. Search for Jean Fitchie (age 26) in Angus, and you will find her with two children - George Robertson and Charles Langlands. Christina had died in 1866. No sign of Peter.

All the best,

AndrewP

Annette you are an O:) Many, many thanks indeed.

I thought they must have been mis-indexed but couldn't get my head around what!

Looking at the Family Group Record I have, I printed it off on 5 October 2003 - so 10years off and on I have been looking for this family prior to 1881. Ask TS and it is sorted in 10 mins!! As I said, sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees.

Off to get the details you have given me - what a great start to the day.

Many thanks again

Christine.

Andrew, not sure if you want to be an angel too so will just say "Thank you so much" =D>

Yes, I have the birth certificates for George, Christina and Peter, but not Charles. I can get that now.

Charles also becomes Langlands. He is with his brother George and family in the 1911 census in Dundee. Peter goes to Perth and Christina died aged three weeks in 1866.

I also checked the variants tab but nothing was coming up.

Many thanks

Christine.

Hi folks! I found this forum by just Google-ing "Jane Fitchet". Here's my story...

I was born in Canada but I now live in Seattle. Jane Fitchet(t) is my great-great grandmother on my mother's side. Peter Fitchet Langlands (my great grandfather) was born illegitimate in 1867 to Jane and a mill overseer (Peter Langlands) in Dundee (I have the birth certificate). Peter was a jute mill overseer also and took several trips to India which I have ships records of.

I'd be happy to share the complete info if anyone is interested. All the other details/siblings match up! Sooooooo....I'm guessing we're related, albeit distantly?

Feel free to email me, my personal email is iain.parsons AT hotmail.com. I'm on Ancestry.com also.

Hi Iain,

Wow, can't believe it. :D Jane Fitchett was also my great great grandmother. I am descended from George Robertson Fitchett - known as George Robertson - who died in 1935. Christina died just weeks old. Charles died in 1917 in Dundee. He (Charles) married in 1910 and in the 1911 census he is living with George and his family in Dundee. From what I can remember Peter died in Perth?

Would certainly be interested in learning more about Peter.

Will be in touch.

Regards
Christine

What a fantastic outcome, you start out looking for your ancestors and end up finding living relatives.
Great stuff.

Thanks Trish,

Amazing isn't it. Emails have been going backwards and forwards, as you can imagine. Even more amazing is that he lives just south of Seattle and our son and family live in.....Seattle. What a small world we live in!!
