Request for Census Look Ups

Post by q98929 » Sat May 28, 2016 2:02 am

On 15 August 1894, Margaret (nee Duncan) McCREADIE, born circa 1820, died at Girnel Close, 59 Quay Street, Saltcoats. Her husband Andrew, a salmon fisherman, died 20 October 1883, also at Saltcoats. As Saltcoats was NOT a Parish at 1894, their address should recorded in the Parish of Stevenston.

I would be very grateful for all Census information to further my research of this suspected branch of my ancestors.

Hi there
In 1891 Margaret McCreadie aged 70 and born in Rothsay, Bute was living at 58 Quay Street Stevenson and living on private means. She was living by herself.

In 1881 Andrew and Margaret McCreadie were in Saltcoats, Stevenson, Ayr at Garuel Close Quay Street. Andrew was a salmon fisher and he was born abut 1814 in "???? Ballantrae" as transcribed at Ancestry.com.

Hope that's a good start for you!

Excellent ninatoo, many thanks.

IF your "????" reads "Shellknowe", then Andrew is most probably one of mine.

Their 1857 Marriage Extract, despite recording this as her 2nd marriage, records her surname as DUNCAN only, not "formerly ....." - unusual! Searches of Ancestry and LDS reveal nothing of whom, when or where she first married. The 1861 Census records both Andrew and Margaret but no issue by any surname; McCREADIE, DUNCAN or her first married surname.

Other than her parents and 2nd husband Andrew, the sole relative I can locate is nephew Archibald ROBERTSON, indicative of at least one sister who married a ROBERTSON. Archibald was recorded as Informant on Margaret's 1894 Death Extract.

I don't know what the ???? are. That's exactly as transcribed at ancestry.com. If you want to see the original, you could search for it at scotlandspeople website.

Archibald Robertson's parents were Daniel Robertson and either Lillias or Lillian Duncan. I can't quite read her name. You could check Daniel and Lillias/Lillian's marriage cert. to see who her parents were. If they are the same as Margaret's, let us know and one of us can check the census records for the family in 1841 and 1851.

Glasgow Herald, Tuesday, October 23, 1883

Next, some large fish stories.

The Caledonian Mercury and Daily Express, Thursday, September 8, 1859
CAPTURE OF A SHARK.--On Friday last, a huge shark, of the white species got entangled in Mr M'Creadie's salmon nets in the Bay of Luce, Wigtonshire. (Article goes on to describe the shark and it sounds like a Great White. Only a youngster at 12 feet long, and ¾ ton, so he probably didn't need to get a bigger boat.)

Glasgow Herald (Glasgow, Scotland), Wednesday, August 7, 1872
Large Salmon.--There was last night exhibited in the window of Mr M'Creadie, fishmonger, here, a salmon which had been caught at Mr M'Creadie's fishings at Ballantrae, which weighed 50 lbs., and was about four feet in length, and 32 inches in circumference.

Good Fishing,
Alan

LATER:
Hannah from Shellknowe renting out a house in Ballantrae in 1899.

In 1841, Lilly Duncan and daughters Catherine, Margaret, and Lilly were living at Quay Street, Stevenston, Ayrshire. The mother's occupation is given as SP Deal. I don't know what that was. There are no men at their residence.

In 1861, Catherine is living at Quay St. again with her nephew Daniel Robertson, age 2.

Thanks to all thus far.
speleobat2: I believe "Sp Deal" to be "Spirit Dealer" - one who buys/sells alcohol which would fit with the fact she was living by her "own means".

More SP research results to follow.
