Post by trish1 » Sun Feb 04, 2018 2:24 pm

Was there a specific reason for asking/recording number of "Rooms with one or more windows" in the 1911 Census

thanks

Hi Trish,

This was a question first asked in the 1861 census, and reflected concerns about housing conditions:

Thanks Ross - I thought the window tax was gone by then - which was mentioned in your link

In 1861 there were 121 windowless houses in Edinburgh. In 1911 there were none.

Thanks Alan - your search skills are legendary on TS.

My family were living in a house where 2 rooms had windows.

I find it interesting that apartment buildings are being built today where some of the rooms do not have windows. Back when I was involved with building or buying a house - every room had to have a window. The more things change, the more they go back to the past.

So right, Trish. It seems, we go backwards in some regards. Multiple dwellings are the most common places here these days, with electric fans used for ventilating washrooms placed along inside walls, but I'm not a 'fan' of this practice.

I now live in one of those Frances. 2 bathrooms with fans and, as I call it, a hole in the wall laundry also with a fan. At least we still have windows in the bedrooms and living area!
